There are some people that just don't fit in our capitalist system. We all take it for granted that everyone can get a job and go to work day after day after day and keep a budget so they can be self sufficient. But there are definitely people out there who just can't function that way. Many hide in plain sight by getting married and living of the labor of their spouse. But many also live a life where they just go from one job to another and one apartment to a friend's couch to a relative's garage and so on. My sister in law went to college and is generally a smart enough person to be able to go into most well paying professions. She has never had trouble with drugs or drinking and has mostly been self sufficient. But she has never had a real job. She has worked as a barista and waited tables. That is it. Every time she gets an opportunity to work in a more professional position as a manager or keeping the books, she finds some excuse for why the job isn't working out and quits. She started a business selling stuff at farmer's markets. It was doing ok but she would skip markets when the weather was nice (i.e. when business is best) and eventually gave up on it. Her son just graduated from HS and isn't going to college. She bought into the whole "college isn't worth it for a lot of people" argument. But her son is just making sandwiches at Jimmy Johns and living at home. His plan was to learn welding and make swords and knives like the modern blacksmith guys on TV. Then he found out that welders in his area mostly work at the refineries. So, plan B is Jimmy Johns. Fortunately, she is with a guy who can pay the bills. But that should have enabled her to go back to school or get a certificate in something so she could have a real job. But she just won't do it.
You can beat on these people all you want but they won't change. For whatever reason, they just cannot handle the workaday world most everyone else has to live in.
