Nope. The rules require a 1 year commitment on your NLI. She will lose a year.
yep youre right. Looks like the new rule changes are starting in 24-25.
Can somebody explain what this is all about with these new rules?
And I've seen a few kids do this with different D1 schools in the past few years- they announced their commitment to one school, then over the summer announced that they were now going somewhere else. Once you initially commit, you're not really committed? I don't get what's going on.
I don't know how I feel about this. On one hand, yes it's her college career, the only one she has. But Florida was saving a spot for her, now she's leaving them "high & dry" (well, not exactly. they have a ton of other recruits, but you know what I mean).
you don't really know what the situation is with a team until you get there are try it out. What if she tries out NC State and hates it? It's a bad look to have committed to FL and then drop them when "something better" comes along.
My 2 cents.
There is roughly a 0% chance you would have made this post if a dude did something like this.

That's not true at all, (I'm also a woman) I would be equally as critical if a guy did this! That being said, I purposely came back here to change my opinion because coach change wrote:

She committed to FSU because of Mires. Mires left 2 weeks ago to coach at Louisville
If there was a distance coach change, then I think it's fine to switch teams last minute. Albeit, you're leaving your future team high & dry, but they should recognize that as part of the inevitable consequence(s) of having a coach leave, the situation is out of their control. Also, she shouldn't have to loose eligibility (though she might, I'm not sure what the rule is if it isn't the head coach).
Which is kind of unfair b/c most assistant track coaches are the distance coaches, amiright? Controversial statement: who really cares who the head coach is if you're not working with him/her day in and day out.
Tl; dr: I would be critical of a runner (male or female) who decommitted from their school just because they got a better offer (because they had a stellar senior track season), but it looks like that's not what happened here.
National Letter of Intent program announces changes that will allow athletes to change schools without penalty in certain circumstances, beginning with upcoming signing year. pic.twitter.com/yFA0wKlMZA

That doesn't seem to be true.
Sam McDonnell only ran a few months of her freshman year at Alabama and then she transferred to UCLA and ran for UCLA in the spring.
That's because Waters released her from her NLI commitment like with Amaris. Braman may be doing the same. Coaches don't want to look bad especially if said athlete goes to social media and expresses being withheld from "opportunities" !
The coaching carousel is saddening. FSUs women’s distance lost an assistant and not their head coach. The athletes have every right to move on to something better. The coach and main recruiter leaves the team “high and dry” at a bigger impact than an incoming first year runner.
Thanks for posting. This change is, IMO, a STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION for student-athletes. It won't apply to Stephens - if I understand this correctly - because it is only in affect for people who are signing for *next year* (class of 2024 recruits).
That being said, still not as fair as it could be....IMO, student-athletes should be allowed to bail if their coach (for example, assistant coach in distance) bails. COACHING IS A MAJOR DECIDING FACTOR. The new rule in affect for class of '24 is just for head coach changes; meaning if the assistant [in charge of] distance coach bails, you still have to run the fall semester and then transfer in order not to get a penalty.
Who is Florida state going to get at this last minute, you know? Don't most teams start practicing in August. it's almost august.
she'd get one free transfer like everyone with no sitting out. It's just a question of whether NC State can accept/add students at this point for fall semester. I have no idea to be honest.
She’s already in the NC State campus directory, so this has clearly been in the works for a minute.
I have no idea whether Leah still needs a release from FSU (or if she has one already) to compete in 2023. While this is a certainly a big deal for future XC seasons, I not sure this is as big a deal for NC State in 2023 as some posters believe.
