Have you ever seen someone blow up their life for no apparent reason? What happened?

I suffer from catastrophic thinking a lot. Imagine going through tough times with happiness about confidence knowing there are yet-to-be-known bright sides balancing out the discomfort of change.

Another good one is supposedly from some historical Indian person(India).:

Yep. My ex boyfriend. He seemed to go about 2 years between 'episodes' of crazy decisions. I didn't realise it was a trend with him when I was first seeing him. His decisions included resigning from his job and giving up.paid employment in his mid thirties, buying a terrible apartment in a terrible area, ending our relationship twice for no real reason given (turned out to be cheating), marrying a woman from The Phillipines he didn't really know and 2 years later, divorcing her. He also cut off all his former friends for new ones, who themselves are probably cut off now. He would also change his hobby frequently, do the new hobby excessively and then lose all interest in it and talk about he much he hated it.

Every so often, I meet somebody who used to know him and they update me on his most recent craziness. Otherwise, I avoid all his attempts to contact me. I have him blocked everywhere. Its kind of sad. He used to be really hot and have a good career. i suspect mental health problems, maybe psychotic episodes or something, but he is both arrogant and alienating and would never seek treatment. Its like he's addicted to the drama and enjoys upsetting people.

I had a neighbor who was super friendly and outgoing. Everyone loved that guy. He was one of those awesome people who lived down the street and was always out in his yard or in his driveway talking to neighbors. He had a super nice family --- three cute little kids and very pretty wife and so on...

Then one night the neighborhood dads were hanging out in the driveway talking and suddenly two (female) baristas/bartenders about 10 years younger than all of us showed up to "have a beer." For some reason he had invited them on a whim.

Next thing you know, he is divorced, living in an apartment two towns away, never sees any of us anymore, and lost his house and kids and wife.

He did marry one of the bartenders but seriously, WTH? Crazy.

Childhood friend smoked fake weed “K2” sometime during end of senior year or freshman year in college. Ended up dropping out or something by the end of freshman year and then just mostly chilled and played video games for a few years. No clue what he’s doing now.

Yeah, but he would have ended up some rich Saudi who got fat and no one remembered. Instead he became one of the most recognized villians of all time and changed the course of history. Who knows what really motivates people. Sometimes one small decision at a point in time can set people on a path that no one could have foreseen.

I almost thought you were talking about my ex boyfriend, except for the fact he seeks out ...unusual choices of women, possibly also men, and tries to hide it by being somewhat reclusive. And there's a cruel streak in my ex which enjoys blowing up other people's lives at the same time as his own. But he did the overthinking thing too, wondering out loud what might go wrong in relationships and then using it an excuse when he messed up - he was "just bad at relationships".

I don't think it ever occurred to him that he was bad at life in general, and his relationship problems were just the fallout from that.

Yeah, there was none of that in this guy.

My impression is that his overthinking / perfectionist tendencies had him locked into second gear, which was still more than enough to excel, but eventually drove him into mentally burning out.

Last week I was running down a specific section of woods. Got home and on the news it said the path had been sealed off as someone killed themselves. Police must have arrived 30 minutes after I passed through so it's possible I went past the body. That's happened a few times around here. Life is pretty miserable if you don't have a lot of money or friends or partner especially in this cost of living crisis. We can't all be wealthy americans with six figure incomes.

RoJo, why would I share this? It was and is tragic in our family and community. Part of the protection and cover up of what happened is why has has remained COO.

This pretty much came out of nowhere and it was in the news in a way: he was one of the unnamed perhaps thousands who suffered during the pandemic and we simply didn’t catch it. He was becoming more and more paranoid and about a week before this happened he became ultra religions with thoughts of grandeur. If it makes you feel better, he was a great pole vaulter. Let’s just say this article from Andy Dunn helped him in his recovery and like I say he is now close to 100% -

This boy is uppity.

My cousin was living with her boyfriend who made great money from running a law firm and treated her like a queen. But she didn’t want to feel “taken care of” and wanted to prioritize her own career and prove that she could be financially secure on her own, so she took a job with a six-figure salary on the other side of the country in a crappy area she hated. A year later her position was eliminated and she was left with no job and no boyfriend.

I know dozens of people who did great in college, mostly in STEM fields, then went on to enter Ph.D programs. Some of them eventually recovered, but even for them it was like almost a decade down the drain.
