Not what I expected from the title of the thread. 100% on the athlete. Every top runner knows the motorbike pulls off like that in the finishing straight. I believe she's even run the race before. No one else was confused.
Not all the time. I was leading a race once that finished on the track. Motorcycle led me all the way to the finish line. Lol
Excitement and max-effort at finish probably turns off calm predicting thinking, it's understandable.
The summer circuit of races always has these little weirdness from novices but if she's in it before that is odd.
I think race-directors could chime in how to prevent this?
My "armchair observer" thought is that there should be some kind of signaling from the motorcycle where a blinking light or something is turned OFF to indicate it's no longer active/leading.
It's happened enough times that I can vaguely remember things like this from other races.
Nice problem to have I guess when you get a motorcycle to follow, only races I've ever led were so small there was no vehicle, once a dude on a mountain bike which was actually annoying lol
But I cannot imaging having to breathe exhaust the whole way, that would bother me, everything should be electric.

We can tell people like you 100 times that SHE HAS FINISHED THIS RACE BEFORE AND IT'S THE EXACT SAME COURSE and people like you still won't get it. Is there a number of times you can be told this and have it finally sink in?

Absolutely, that's a factor. But more so, after following the same lead cycle for 6 miles it's only natural for her to follow it to the end. As soon as that lead bike made that turn it should have been sealed off by volunteers, cones,...whatever, to prevent this. This is Peachtree not some podunk 5K. A cry'in shame for Teferi.

It is such a comically American thing to have not one but THREE massive motorcycles "escorting" the racers, but to have them drive as if they've never run or watched a race in their life.
We have seen this so many times. Idiot driver makes a turn down a road that is perfectly plausibly the finishing route. Redlined runner follows the bike that they have been glued to for the past 30-140 minutes.

Here's one idea: simply SLOW DOWN WHILE WAVING THE RUNNERS BY.
Here's another idea: continue until nearer to the finish. The clown driver turned off the road OVER THIRTY SECONDS BEFORE THE FINISH, probably more than 200 meters. There is no reason he couldn't have stayed on to within 100m of the finish line, or even 50m.

There is a lot of road between that and driving "through the finish line."
didn't she win the race the previous year ? is it that she won so many races last year she forgot the course ? runner responsibility to know the route. so sad, too bad.
