Aregawi is absolutely fearless. I hope, for his sake, that he hasn’t shot his load with these recent great performances.
I’m a fan of relatively frequent racing and I think Jerry might sometimes do the BTC athletes a disservice by limiting early season competition so much, but I do wonder if people like Aregawi who just pushes hard the whole way in long distance races might be cooked by the WC. I hope he’s there and ready to duke it out with Jakob, Kejelcha, Kiplimo, and Cheptegei.
He needs to race the championships like that. Last year he ran scared. This year, both he and Kiplimo are better-served running the last half of the race HARD. Unless they want Jakob, Kejelcha and Cheptegei to outkick them.
If Aregawi tries this in Budapest he won’t medal, especially if he’s doubling. He might lead the winner under Kipchoge’s 12:52 CR though.
Great idea. I'll add Mo Katir and Hagos Gebrehiwet to the mix. Hagos finished 3rd today.
Gebrhiwet has been running sub 12:50 for 11 YEARS and may not be .
This actually might be the most insane thing about today. Hagos and Gebremeskel clowned on Kipchoge so hard in the paris 2012 race they sent him off to the roads, never to return. And here we are 11 years later, look how that turned out... and Hagos is still out there running in the 12:40s.
If Aregawi tries this in Budapest he won’t medal, especially if he’s doubling. He might lead the winner under Kipchoge’s 12:52 CR though.
Worked for Daniel Komen. If you are strong as heck and put relentless pressure on everyone it gives you a shot. Throw in that Kiplimo might take a turn at the front too.
Let's get Kiplimo and Kejelcha, Aregawi and Cheptegei, Ingebrigtsen. Who else am I missing? Put the lights on 12:35 and put up $500,000 for 1st and a million for sub-12:30. Make it THE GREATEST 5000 Race in history.
What's crazy is many of those men won't medal at Worlds.
Girma too!
Crazy that we don’t name one Kenyan in the top… 10? in the 5000.
Testing in Kenya.
Not testing in Ethiopia and Uganda.
Is the answer to your question.
Times will be much slower at Worlds and Olympics, as they have been since 2016, due to latest and sophisticated testing. Not much testing takes place at DL meets, and when it does it’s not necessarily deep testing nor of the top finishers.
Worked for Liz McColgan at the 1991 Worlds 10K in Tokyo, but didn't work for her the following year at the Barcelona Olympics. If the weather in Budapest is in the upper 70s/low 80s with humidity over 50% (as seems to be the pattern) it will be hard for Aregawi to replicate this.
And I hate to remind everyone but the dude is younger the G. Fisher and the one just ahead of him in Tokyo. The good news for Fisher is Kejeclhas isn't in the 10,000.
Fisher sucks. Hasn’t done crap this year. Had one good year where he was clearly still on the juice. Now he’s to sus and can’t get away with it and you see what happens. Starts to suck again. Is he the person that has 2 missed tests?
APA-Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Seven Ethiopian athletes are under investigation for possible breaching of doping rules, according to the national anti-doping body. Mekonnen Yidersal, Director General of Ethiopia Anti-Doping Autho...

Jakob dominated all of the top 5k runners at the WC last year.
Have things changed this year. Looks like they have. But until someone beats Jakob...

False. Kenya has the reigning DL champ but he’s only raced in Florence and had a bad race. Krop last years silver medalist has been a little off-form and likely opted to train like crazy over DL paydays. Their other contenders have shown good form but not in fast races (Levy Kibet 13:04 in On Paris, 3 guys around 13 in Japan, Simiu in road races, Kandie/Sawe the same). You need participants on the circuit to generate fast times.
Testing in Ethiopia from what we are told by doping authorities IS robust. Since nearly all the athletes live in Addis, it could not be easier to track them down. Uganda there’ve been no complaints either.
Also lots of testing at DL. If you want to cry doping it’s microdosing that beats the tests not lack of them.
