Obviously the athletes are preparing for the World Championships. But if they weren’t, I would love to see Girma and Jakob in the 5000m. Jakob would really have his hands full with Girma and Kiplimo, and I would not necessarily expect Jakob to win.
Jakob is beatable in the 5000m at high pace. Something like 12:40.
Until now he is despising longer distances.
Of course, Jakob is beatable at both events, but he’s not easily beaten. In Oslo he lined up and convincingly beat the world’s best at the 1500. There remains questions if he can do this without pacing, but he’s not really going to be able to figure this out until Budapest. He seems to know what he needs to do, basically push the pace from as far out as he can and front run it. What does he gain by doing this again and maybe running a little faster? I’d think he’d want to now test himself in a 5000 now and gain some additional insights for Budapest about where things stand. Would Jakob have been able to tuck in behind Kiplimo and Kajelcha in Paris and still have been able to out close them? Maybe not, but it might behoove him to give it a go before late August and then decide if he needs to adjust his prep or tactics.

Monaco does not have a women's 800m, so I assumed that was actually a typo.
Stockholm somewhat shockingly also already has entries:
Chebet vs. Gidey at 5K too.
Yep, Kenyan Daily Nation was the source for me, didn't check it, errors, errors...
Stockholm W 5000, I'm hoping for Koko making return, in Doha 19 she placed 3rd in much faster race than was in Oregon 22 where Chebet took silver. Though Chebet on a roll and Koko I don't know. But Letesenbet should smoke her.
Well if they do decide to run the 5000 at 12:40 pace, Jakob has to go with them, there really is no alternative. If he cannot keep with the pace then he knows he doesn’t have the strength. However, I am quite sure he can handle that pace after the 2 mile performance
Jakob is going to absolutely wipe the floor with Wightman. He's still got a chip on his shoulder from that World Champs loss.
I'm hoping for a Jakob PR and W but can you imagine if Wightman won oh my god I would lose my sht and the stage would be set for Worlds.
Excited to see what Ky can do in the 5k, although I doubt he's gonna be very close to Kiplimo/Cheptegei/Barega. I wonder if the pace is gonna be anywhere near as hot as it was last week. Kiplimo obviously wasn't expecting Kejelcha to be able to stick with the pace, and I'm not sure anyone in the field can stick with it if he tries again.

I’m not sure why Kiplimo would bother trying to run so fast again unless he’s trying to break the wr. I think he should try and see how he’d do off a much slower race. Can he crush everybody with a crazy last 1-2K even if the race up to this point is slow. Maybe he/they can try and figure out if the have a chance to hold off Jakob over the last 1000 even in a 13 min race?

I have no doubt Jakob will bear Wightman in a paced diamond league. Worlds might be a different story without rabbits. Wightman’s 1:43 speed can be helpful in those types of races. Who knows what could happen

Well Kiplimo may be thinking about the heats or he may be thinking about the 10000m. He probably knows his best chance is the 10000m and that these 5000m races are serving as preparation.
Looks pretty great, though some notable withdrawals:
800W: Keely vs. Moraa who is targeting sub-1:56; bunch of 1:58 SB athletes as well, deep field 110H: Izuyima (13.04) first DL I think, not much top-end talent but good Europeans like local star Jason Joseph 3KST W: Almayew (9:00 SB) looks like the future of the event, but Beatrice Chepkoech is rested and looks in her best form in years, Abebe looking to rebound, and Chemutai in the field as well 100W: Kambudji opens up vs. Luckenkemper and Neita 5000M: Kiplimo vs. Cheptegei vs. Haile Bekele vs. Barega vs. Aregawi; smart withdrawal from Kejelcha IMO, Katir also out of this meet, youngsters Kuma Girma (younger brother of Lamecha) and Boka Diriba (U20 XC bronze) bear watching in their first time in the big leagues 100H: Dream matchup with Camacho-Quinn, Amusan, Alayshia Johnson, Tia Jones and Nia Ali 200M: Battle of the second tier...Tebogo vs. Richards vs. Fahnbulleh vs Aaron Brown vs. Mena 400H W: Femke Bol vs. the sub-52 barrier 1500: Event of the meet with the 100m hurdles; Jakob, Wightman's return, Girma (1500 DL Debut), Reynold Cheruiyot DL debut (skip the 3:30s?), Kerr, Farken and Arese (DL Debuts), Heyward (welcome back)
Should be a great meet with the W100 and M200 only events kind of looking like duds.
As far as pacesetting goes... the 1500 has Akbache and Sowinski. My lone concern there is I'm presuming Sowinski is the second pacer and he is unlikely to be able to reach 1,000 like the pacer in Oslo did. The 5,000 has Callum Davies, but it's unclear who the second pacer will be.
Another awesome meet. Really in a golden patch of talent in the sport right now that is really worth watching every meet.
I wonder what the 1500m will be set at - I will keep my ear close to the ground and get that intel as soon as I can. Fingers crossed it's closer to 1.50.5 than 1.51.5

After Paris I’m not sure why Kiplimo and Kajelcha would be anything other than confident that they might win the 5000 m gold? That race was the model for beating Jakob and it didn’t seem that the pacing or lights mattered to them. These guys, and any others fit enough, need to share the work to be sure it’s a 12:40 race and then just try and race it out at the end. If they don’t, they will just be handing the gold to Jakob. If they do, one or more of them might have a chance to be the champ. If the race is one in which Jakob can take water breaks, forget it, they have no chance.

Ive been reading that people were gonna share the pace to break the 1,500 specialist since 2012 with Mo. It literally never happens, the pace always lags at a Championship.
And im not sure that is the model to beat Jakob. He just ran 7:54, a long drive for home over the final 2K without having to lead sets up perfectly for him.
The Olympics 5,000 in Tokyo was fast and broke some of the kickers. I think that might be what they’re looking for with more coordination. Last year it was so hot, I think everyone just gave up on a fast one.
As far as this one, Barega and Aregawi need a fast time potentially (Ethiopian 10K trials are in 2 days). Cheptegei definitely will want to win, though he should be comfortable waiting. Haile Bekele has no incentive to push before 1k to go. I suspect 12:50 is more likely than 12:40, but if either Barega/Aregawi miss out on the 10K, it might be in their best interest to work hard the 4th kilometer. Aregawi is much better with pace and space anyway. If he’s recovered he should consider mimicking what Kiplimo did in Oslo.

Definitely. I think too, had Jakob wanted to, he was fit enough to run 12:41 also that day. But they will have to take away his kick, if it's possible.

The 1500 serves as a nice warm-up for the British champs. Only Stonier is missing. Looking forward to seeing where Wightman is at. It I can't see anything other than a very comfortable win for Jakob.

I am getting flashbacks to Mo Farah 2013. You guys were saying the same thing. "These Kenyans/Ethiopians need to share the work to beat Mo."
The fact is, they are not going to. Even if they did, they aren't dropping Jingy. He didn't race those guys until Worlds last year and he destroyed them. He will do it again.

This doesn’t alter the fact that Kiplimo knows his best chance for Gold is the 10000m and he will have to recover from this before the 5000m heats. The 5000m is more challenging for him with the 10000m in his legs, and the 10000m is his better event.

Few notes though:
-Injured Cheptegei (in prelims)
-Overcooked/Injured Kejelcha
-No Kiplimo (only ran 10K after injuries in Spring)
-No Katir (only raced 1500 after illnesses in spring)
Last year Jingys strongest competition was Krop who while really good (12:45) is not on the level of this year’s Kiplimo, Kejelcha, Katir nor Cheptegei at his best. He lost to a fully-fit Kiplimo and Kipkorir pretty definitively at the Commonwealth Games.

Yes. I think this will be a repeat of Oslo last year with Wightman fading the last 200. Would love to be wrong, but I suspect Girma, Cheruiyot and potentially Kerr will be the bigger dangers. I think Farken and Arese have to be considered contenders to do what Habz and Nordas did and lop off a huge chunks off their PBs in a way faster race than they've been in.
Kinda wish Jakob would run this 5000 instead of another 1500. I’m fine waiting to see him race Wightman until August and would rather see him v Kiplimo in a fast 5000, but he’s clearly obsessed with the 1500. Is he going to be targeting another PB?
I read an interview in which he said he was aiming to go as far below 3:30 as possible in Lausanne so filling in the dots I would suspect yes.
