I am from Chicago. The violence is tragic and awful, but it should be put into context of the situation of the entire city. Chicago has the worst finances of any large city in the country. They have an enormous pension liability, and their easiest path to raise revenue is raising property taxes - a move which even Johnson - who is over his head when it comes to finances - knows is very painful for the bungalow belt dwellers in Chicago and which will lead to an exodus of people. Once the federal COVID money melts away next year, Chicago's options - whether they are investments in "root" causes or more police and more effective policing (as compared against current conditions) - are going to be very limited. The commercial real estate market and its decline will diminish all sorts of revenues from downtown, as will crime on the CTA which makes coming back downtown even more difficult. Viewing this through only a racial lens is a mistake. There have been very successful immigrant success stories (e.g., Pilsen) that are right now exceedingly fragile. Schools are in bad shape despite enormous per capita expenditures and whatever the excuses the schools make it increasingly difficult to establish a middle class. Chicago was a great place for upward mobility in the 70's - a poor single mother kid like me could earn a scholarship to a great university and come home to eight weeks of a really high paying union job to make everything work. It is not that way now.
