Been going on for a long time in sports but I don't know when it started in track. I saw a high school kid do it in about 2001. I wasn't a fan of that back then either.

OK, so what's a better gesture? I've thought of a few that are more indicative of good manners: the royal wave as you cross the line, turn and do a tiny courtesy or bow, bring a chair to the finish line and sit, relax and have a scone while your opponents finish (only works for longer races).
