Jeff lives in Atlanta. Joe is in Harrisonburg, VA. Brantley has been back in Florida for a while, I think.
I thought Randy ran faster than that for some reason. Didn't he place like 5th at Nationals one year? Maybe that was the year that it was really warm and all the times were slow.
I think Coates has actually run mid 15:00's this year.
Brevard would be a great place for a ZAP-type setup. Better for running than Boone, from what I have seen of both.
Shiloh is good, but that record only fell by as much as it did because the leaves hadn't fallen yet.
I grew up in Atlanta when Pinkston was in his prime (I was like in high school or middle school) and I don't think he was in the 29:00's, but maybe. He was good, though, and was up there in alotof local races during the Arega Abraha days. He always wore those two-tone nike pink and black tights. He had fabulous hair.

This is a list of current locals or former residents who ran under 2:40 in the since 2000. Jeff Campbell has a 2:16:21 at Birmingham in 2003 while a resident of Michigan. Jason Bodnar ran his 2:22:35 while living in Florida. Dane Mitchell has since run 2:30:31 while living in Flagstaff, Arizona. I included Coates Kennerly on the list since he was mentioned. He and Chad Newton were the only ones to win thier races when they set the times listed above.
This list isn't exhaustive because Newton got second at Rocket City in late 2000 in 2:23:35 and 2:24 at NYC the year it was the US Championships (after a 1:09 half - he was the dejected looking guy Ndreba passed in the last half mile or so on TV).
ashley placed 4th at the U.S. Marathon Champs in '99, 2:19:24...
I know that several of the people on the list have run other marathons. It seems that the list is listing the fastest time by the athletes since 2000 if I am reading it right. I know Randy ran 2:19 in 1999, Jeff Campbell ran 2:19:18 for 8th at the 2000 Trials while living in Brevard, but he is listed from Alamosa. Bodnar, Randy, Chad all have several run around the mid 2:25-2:28 range. Will Harlan has run 2:36 like every year since 2001 it seems. Bill Baldwin has a 2:34 in Rocket Cit also.

also, ashley missed his shot at a sub 2:14 when he ran 29:07 on the track in may of '97. he should have jumped in grandma's the next month.
Chad has not run a road marathon slower than 2:25. His road marathons are as follows:
Grandmas in 1995 - 2:21
Trials in 1996 - 2:21
Grandmas in 1999 in 2:22:30 (A fairly narrow Trials miss)
Rocket City in 2001 - 2:23
Vermont City - he ran this twice, won it once and got second once, I think both times in 2:23)
NYC in whatever year it was the US Championships - 2:24
He jokes that every marathon he has run has gotten slower.

so who is the best distance runner in the Brevard area? Did we decide? Randy is done, Bill is done and never was. Chad is good and still going well, Joe and Jeff have moved. Across the board chad n is probably the best.
As for harlan, coates, cason, wolfe and that band of merry trail joggers, they cannot be considered to be fast runners of any description "lets go hike a mountain for a week to see who the best asheville area runner is" please

He ran 2:26:30 to win Vermont City in 2002.Certainly slower than 2:25 and on the roads. With regards to Randy Ashley and his 29:07; has he said that everybody? Even I have heard that and I barely know the guy. I bought shoes from him when he had a running store. If I am not mistaken, the year he was 4th at the uschamps he did run 1:05:00 for half marathon and under 45 minutes at gate river. this was after his 29:07. If we awarded times based off of pr's at other distances, everyone would be sub 2:10 who has ever broken 14 flat for 5K.
hell, If pre had not died in that car accident, he could of jumped into the olympic 5k in Montreal and won the shit based on his 13:21 in 72.

Chad actually ran 2:26 the year he won Vermont City. That was the high wind year when nobody dared to lead alone.
I think track races this spring are going to see some good duels between Newton, and Stu Moran and possibly Jason Bodnar, who has run some fast times in the past. Stu is a sleeper and folks forget about him because he's a tea-drinkin', Roger Bannister-lovin' limey. He has gone 1:07 and change for Half and 30:11 in Mobile last year on the roads for 10k. They are talking up some good natured match racing on the track this spring.

Cason ran a road marathon this past december and regularly races road 5K's and halfs.

Frankie Adkins did a 2:41 on his first road marathon a few months ago, he is getting better and better.
