If you come across anyone who passionately argues that one surface is preferable to another in all circumstances then you're best off walking away.
All have their uses and benefits for both body and mind and how you mix it up depends on fitness, goals, the workout you're doing etc.
For my part, I trained on specific surfaces for specific workouts depending on what I wanted to achieve (road, grass, mud, track, hills) and tried to run as much as "off road" (which ended up being mixed running most of the time, particularly in the dark winter) the rest of the time.
