Spikes came out in the 1890s. None of those sports have anything to do with distance running. But, yeah, try using a corked bat in the MLB. Can't wait for rotating tracks - then we can all be fast - well, in comparison to those that didn't have the chance to run on rotating tracks.
They are example of how all sports change. It happens. Stop with the "get off my lawn" old man takes and move on with your life. Every single sport changes and improvements are made to the technology of it.
I know, right!? Can't wait for those rotating tracks (similar to the walkways they have in airports). Might be able to get my 5k time down to under 21 min. with one of those. Pretty excited about it. Or, this is my idea, a huge fan on either end of the home and back stretch (facing opposite directions) and pushes you forward. Imagine having the rotating track and the fans!
Everyone in the race gets to use the same track. Richie rich kids get to use technology other kids might not be able to afford.
That was one of the reasons the super-swimsuits got banned.
If you can afford to train in and replace shoes that often it's a big advantage.
GTFO of here with that nonsense and cry yourself to sleep! I hate to break it to you but Its like this with everything, life isn't fair now go back to your basement!
Whoa! Calm down - dude (very undude like actually). How are you gonna break 16:00 with that kind of attitude?

It's just that some people on this message board are upset that nobody is excited that a bunch of our high school kids are going sub-4.
And I'm like, ummm......................................
Unless these kids can beat the Africans, these bio-hacked tech-enhanced fast times are basically meaningless.
Oh, great little Preston Cyborg just ran a 3:44 mile. Whatever. Wake me when he beats some Africans.
no, PED use is far worse. Having women and kids on the juice, with all the masculinising effects, is really pretty grotesque.
I recall my best mate at the weightlifting club being given anabolic steroids at 16, supported by a well know doctor and coach. F...ing disgrace.
Even now, PED use is a problem because those with the resources and knowledge behind them have an enormous advantage over clean athletes, perhaps making it even more unequal in terms of a level playing field than decades ago.

The reason PEDs are banned is not because they enhance performance, as many things do, but they are incredibly dangerous and would force athletes to choose between their longterm health and being competitive.
400m record cinder track 44.9; 400m record Tartan track 43.86
Actually, it went from 44.5 to 44.19. But cool - one WR that could maybe, possibly, kinda sorta be the result of synthetic vs. cinder track. Men's 3000m WR record took 4 years after the introduction of synthetic to be broken by 2 seconds. Took 3 years for Clarke's 2-mile record to go down by 1.8 seconds. Took 4 years for Wottle to basically run the same time Snell did back in '62 in the 800m.
Records that have been set just since 2020.
World Outdoor
Men's and Women's 5000m & 10000m
Men's and Women's 5k and 10k
Men's and Women's One Hour
Men's and Women's Half-Marathon
NCAA Outdoor
Men's and Women's 5000m (7 of the top 10 men's times are since 2020)
Men's and Women's 2-Mile
Women's Steeplechase
US HS Outdoor
Boy's 1500m, 3000m, 2000m SC, and 5000m
Girl's 1600m, 3200m, 2000m SC, and 5000m
All just since super shoes! This isn't even counting all the national and indoor records or the fact that almost as many HS kids ran sub 4 in the last 3 years than the previous 53 years (9 since 2020; 10 from 1964 - 2017).
There is always evolution in sport. Try golfing with a mashe or a niblick sometime (wooden shafts) and you'll really appreciate technological development.

This is what I’ve been saying all along. We need more and better technology! Rotating tracks. Shoes with actual springs (enough with the pebax and carbon plate nonsense). Fans at either end of the straightaways to give you a little boost. While we’re at it, just cut a lap from the 10000m and make it an even 24 (let’s be honest, most runners already think it’s 24 laps). Or, better yet, make the tracks a little short. To be fair, we’ll have to make all the tracks shorter. Future runners will be saying “try running in non spring-loaded shoes and you’ll appreciate technological development.”
With PEDs, high school kids were generally immune from speculation. We just assume that a 14-year-old kid is not on EPO.
But these super shoes steal the glory from the kids. A kid pops a fast time, and we automatically assume it's the shoes (and for good reason). But still, it takes away the glory and excitement. Always an asterisk after a new record. It ruins the sport more than drugs ever could.
I think that people just need to quit assuming super shoes are the reason people are fast. It’s not like the records for Americans have improved that much at least in the marathon. I believe Hall and Rupp still hold records previous to super shoes and guys in the 80s were as fast as we are now (doping likely). I think what changed running more than anything was GPS watches and social media. I was a 15 min 5k xc guy in high school 2006, and looking back I realized I wasn’t training nearly as fast on the roads as I thought I was. Had I had an gps watch then what I thought were 85-90 mile weeks were really like 70 annd I also thought I was running 6 minute pace always. Haha. Also now we see how others are training because of social media so we try and level up.
shoes help but it is a bunch of stuff combined that has really made the difference.

Hate to break it to you, but every competitive runner sacrifices their long term health.

It's the shoes. There's nothing new in training or nutrition.

I hate to break it to you, we already have "rotating tracks" and it's not quite the advantage you think it is. They are called treadmills.

Except for the men’s and women’s 5000 & 10000m. Men’s 3000m. Men’s and women’s road 5k. Women’s Half and Marathon. And women’s 3000m SC. So, yeah, except for those AR hardly any AR have improved in the last 3 years. Must be all the 5th year senior training.
if the shoes don’t help that much - why spend money on them?

Bruh - a treadmill rotates opposite the direction you’re running. Ever been to an airport? Ever walk on the moving walkways they have? I’m talking about a track made out of one of those.

I said I think it is a combination of a lot of things not just the shoes. We discredit everyone’s hard work because they wear carbon shoes. Most these guys would still run very fast in shoes from 10 years ago.
