I believe Engels has a huge ceiling, but sometimes its just hard to recreate magic.
I believe there are a great deal of pros in the mile/1500 distance nowadays that have the potential to take Ingebrigsten given the right circumstances. We saw it with Wightman last year. But it could have been Kerr, or Garcia Romo, or McSweyn, or Katir... In a hypothetical world, if Hocker, Teare, Nuguse, or even a healthy Centro were in the race, I think there's a chance any of them could come out on top. Of course, if the race is run 100 times, Ingebrigsten wins maybe 50 or 60 of them, but the fact that Wightman wins 1 or maybe just a handful of times is the reason they run the race.
My point being, I believe Engels is one of those people who has the potential the upset for a world gold. But it takes the right day, the right season, and the right mindset going into the race. It's easy to feel that magic during a season like 2019 for Engels, at the height of his newfound popularity, winning all the right races, not taking anything too seriously, and just feeling electric. Just like most of us, he's been through hell since then... lost his coach, covid, destroyed opportunities, new training setup, injuries, left his group for another coach, the list goes on.
BUT... if he can catch lightning again, I have no doubt the sky is the limit for him.
