Great contribution to the thread bro. you seem miserable
Or I can see that Centro is your lover.
Nuh uh. Centro is MY lover.
Happy to see him racing well again. I’m a big Centro fan and was really hoping he wasn’t planning on ending his career going out sad running like a highschooler. Hope he can make one more team before he retires, even if it’s gonna be a “show up for the prelims and get knocked out” type of deal. To take a year off and be able to come back and run 3:40 within a year is mad impressive. I think he will run sub 3:35 again before he retires.
3:40 is very encouraging for Centro at this point. He tends to come around much more slowly. Getting into 3:34-35 shape by trials is not that unrealistic. 7:36 was a pr for Timothy Cheruiyot, whose early results have been very encouraging for fans of the 1500m looking to see a full-strength Tim going against a full-strength Jakob this year.
+1
Centro ran 3:40 in Palo Alto in May 2018 and went on to run high 3:31 in Monaco that year.
He might not be able to copy that scenario but it doestn´t seem unlike that he can go sub 3:35 at the US qualifying trials for Budapest which makes him a contender for the team.
- TimC runs 7:36 in his first ever 3000 and gets called washed, - Fauble runs his third sub2:10 at Boston and gets called a non-factor, - Mantz opens in 62, bonks and still finishes in 2:10 but it's called a bad run, - Tuohy runs a Collegiate 5000m record and its suggested she's already peaked for not breaking 15,
but a Centro 3:40 is respectable? The entry standard alone for Budapest is 3:34 & the USATF National Champs is in less than 2months
Exactly. I have NO idea why Centro is held to a different standard than anyone one these boards. No matter how many shoddy and sun-par times he runs people thing he’s the same 3:30 guy and Olympic Champ he was so many years ago. Stick a fork in him, he’s done.
Read the post above yours by Joe mother. Also, he's an Olympic champion trying to make a comeback from knee surgery.
It's not really a different standard as much as it's a different set of circumstances.
I feel like we've had this thread every Spring for at least 7-8 years and the haters and/or short-sighted chodes love to pile on Centro as if he's buried. I'm not saying he's running under 3:34 or winning a global medal again, but I would NEVER bet against him if he opens with a 3:40. Check the record dummies:
2011: 1:51+3:46 opener in April, 3:34 and WC Bronze in July/August
2012: 3:41 opener in June, OG 4th and 3:31 in August
2013: 3:42c opener in April, 3:33 in July and WC Silver in August
2014: 3:41 opener in April, 3:32 and 3:31 in July
2015: 3:42 opener in April, 3:30 in July and WC 8th in August
2016: 3:41 opener in June, OG Gold in August
2017: 13:48 opener in May, 3:34 in July
2018: 3:40 opener in May, 3:31 in July
2019: 3:37 opener in June, 13:00 in Sept and 3:32 for WC 8th in October
2021: 3:40 opener in March, 3:33 in OG Tokyo in August

So he opens when you decide he opens? I thought he ran like a 1:56 800m and 4:06 mile in February.

He also ran indoors, both this year and in prior years. Clearly these are referring to his opener for the US outdoor track season, which is why they're all in April/May/June.
Also important to note that most of those races were also losses. Obviously getting 3rd in the slow section sounds way worse than running 3:40 to win, but he lost in his opener in 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2019, and 2021. A couple of those were DL openers, but lots of domestic losses and 8th/9th place finishes against second tier pros and collegiates.

Heyooo, big dog has entered the chat!
Outdoors chief, outdoors: Training cycles, periodization, peaking - do you know about that stuff? Centro has a consistent pattern and buildup that has delivered results, annually, well beyond any other American miler in the last decade plus.
