I would assume, unlike the Ethiopian federation with bekele, if eliud wants a spot, eliud has a spot. Berlin would be cool though. I bet he could drop another 30 seconds or more if he doesn't try to go out on 1:59:42 pace.

He has to demonstrate form capable of winning a medal. The Kenyan marathon selection is controversial every year because really good runners get left off. They won’t put him on the team unless he can go top 3 in a major marathon in the fall. He doesn’t have to win Berlin, but he needs to be top 3 with a fast time.

Also, Eliud won't take an Olympic spot from another runner if he feels he doesn't deserve it. Unlike corrupt politician Wesley Korir who imposed himself onto the Rio Olympics team and went on to DNF.
