Why don't pedestrians (including runners) realize that cars are allowed to turn right on red?

If you don't have a green turn arrow then you can only turn right on red if you are clear. A pedestrian still has right of way to the right on red.

I always look not only for cars but up and down the road for pedestrians before I make a right on red.

Speaking as a lawyer, he should worry about killing someone and also a lawsuit. Being in debt from an adverse judgment is no joke and can stick with you holding down your life prospects in a different but still very real way from criminal punishment.

It amazes me to see a pedestrian cross a street without looking.

I am not saying to allow the car to go, I am simply saying to be aware of your surroundings.

I'm not talking about either liability. I'm talking about your action, regardless of fault, causing the death of a pedestrian. Generally, in slow speed fatal car/pedestrian accidents the result is gruesome, something that would stay with you the rest of your life.

Most pedestrians and drivers both fail to understand that a driver has to yield ONLY if the pedestrian is in the roadway.

Don't expect to be safe if you run out in front of a turning car. Drivers aren't looking for fast-moving pedestrians and don't expect that.

In addition, when turning right on red and at stop signs:

1) stop at the white line on the road BEFORE the crosswalk.

2) look left for other cars, but also right for pedestrians crossing from the other direction.

All of these can be true. Pedestrian has the right of way; never assume a driver is going to do what you think. We talk about driving defensively it applies to walking as well.

But the OP makes a different case and a poor one.

AI driven cars will be able to anticipate that and you will be OBSOLETE! Welcome to the welfare state you worthless driving a$$ motherfudger.

If they're turning, and you suddenly appear running in front of them, they will likely convince a court they had no reason to expect a pedestrian to suddenly appear.

Better poor than dead. Just don't surprise drivers.

You’re allowed to turn if there are no pedestrians or other cars coming. Learn the law, idiot. It is your responsibility to look for pedestrians.

If the driver turning right has a red light, chances are the pedestrians going straight in the same direction have the Don’t Walk sign.

Exactly this. The car is WAY heavier than any person and should be viewed as potentially a deadly weapon. Look carefully and be really sure before stepping out into the street.
