I guess it maybe depends on whos in lane 1 and ahead at the moment they hit the bell.. I would say that both have incredible finishing speed, so whoever is forced to run the long way and go wide to pass will be at the disadvantage and would lose. Bekele is known for controlling races from a long way out, and mo farahs main strategy was getting to the front with 600-800 to go and forcing people to pass him wide in the bell lap, so it would defintely be an intense battle even before the bell lap.
It's an interesting question. Both were great runners. Farah was a great tactician as well as an incredible finisher. If he takes the bell in front he is unbeatable from there. El G also showed that Bekele could be taken in the home straight by a runner with more speed. I would put my money on the 3.28 runner but it did take a 3.26 guy to take Bekele in 2004. We will never know.

Indeed.
We have an approximation to the OP's question.

THANK YOU, you beat me to it. Bekele kicking while smiling tells it all
This is a dumb question because part of what made Bekele great was that he would not let this situation happen. Bekele won the 2008 olympic 5k in 12:57 pushing the pace himself from 2k out. If Taoufik Makhloufi and Mo Farah are both fresh at the end of a tactical 5k, who wins? Its dumb because Taoufik Makhloufi wouldn't be fresh at the end of a 5k if Mo Farah was in it.
Well, Bekele let it happen TWICE against el G. Just sayin’.
And yet Bekele outkicked a near prime Lagat in 2009 WC final in a more tactical 5000m ...
Bekele also won a major 1500m race in Stockholm 2005 beating almost everyone who was around at that distance back then bar El Guerrouj who had retired by then ...
In a thrilling race, world record holder Kenenisa Bekele beats his renowned competitors at Weltklasse Zürich 2006 at 5000m with an incredibly fast final lap ...
Don’t think that Farah had started training under Salazar at this time though…or if he had, he wasn’t too long into the program…if you know what I mean…just saying 😉😄
Miruts Yifter winning the 5000m at the IAAF World Cup at Dusseldorf in 1977. A great race won in 13:13.81, less than a second outside the WR at the time. Mar...
Depends on how "fresh". Bekele could close fast even off an already fast pace, but I think in an all out open 400m Farah has an edge. As a previous poster said, Bekele has made a massive tactical error if he lets Farah near him while fresh at the bell. Anything under 13:10 and i think Bekele should be the clear winner.
Someone also brought up El G, who could hang with Bekele in 12:5X championship races. El G was a excellent strength runner and could hang with a fast pace, then use his superior lactic threshold to close the last lap or so quickly. Bekele is obviously the best all-out 5000m runner, so against any 5000m runner with a strong kick or better 800m/1500m his best bet would be to wear them out with a fast pace, which he could then close the fastest off of.
