So his PR is 2:08:45, his current fitness is a couple minutes slower than that, and he decides to go for glory and run 2:04 pace? I'm sorry, that's not heroic, that's just dumb. A 2:10 runner doesn't just pull a 2:04 out of their ars, that will fail 100% of the time.
The stated goal was the Japanese standard of 2:11. He hit the half in 1:02:13 and kept that pace up for at least a couple more miles, which indicates on race day he was capable of 2:10. If only he didn't run like an idiot.
