I personally resonate with symmonds more. Nothing special in highschool, not even really anything special until the end of his collegiate career, barely fast enough to get a pro contract and then consistently top 3 in the nation (usually #1) and consistently top 5 in the world during what I’d consider to be the golden era of 800m running. If Symmonds was a few years younger I’d think he’d have a gold medal or two under his belt.
I like Symmonds because he’s a bit of an Everyman. He didn’t go to the best (or even a good) track university, doesn’t have the ideal 800m build, or the ideal raw foot speed, but put in the work and made it happen.
I like brazier because he was (hopefully will be again) dominant. He was the best in highschool and the best in college, and pretty quickly the best transitioning into the pro scene.
Both are awesome but I relate to Symmonds a lot more.
