Beat Mechaal by the exact distance as Nuguse recently did. For those wondering how Nuguse would do vs Jakob now they will get a very good idea soon ...
You still didn't say that Mechaal beat in the same time Kerr and ranked two in your home.
Onto Kerr, I was a bit surprised the wheels came off so much. Must’ve been ragged off travel because we know he’s fit. He should be untroubled, but while I admire his 3k and getting stronger I still think he needs to get back to speed by Worlds and look to run under 1:45. He’s not going to outstrength Jakob, Nuguse, Katir and probably not Hoare either.
Gourley is dangerous. He can always close, and if he can get to 3:30 fitness he will eke out every bit of fitness much like Mario Garcia Romo who nearly got bronze last year.
I think both this event and his previous were experiments of sorts to determine how fast he can race on strength work alone. He made it clear in the Millrose post-race interview that he intends to get the "speedy legs" going again in the run-up to Worlds.
Edinburgh Athletic Club has to take some credit for Kerr, O’hare, Wightman, and Sharp. I think there is also the fact that success breeds more success. O’Hare and Muir helped set the tone for the rest to believe.
Coscoran took both the Irish Outdoor (3:33.5) and indoor (3:35.4) national records from Ray Flynn (from 1982!) and Marcus O'Sullivan. Big breakthrough.
What do you put this down to? Obviously Kerr gourley O’Hare benefited from us college system but that cannot get credit for Muir wightman and reekie.
aside from Andy young is there we new group of coaches or something.
either way - great to see.
Success breeds success? It isn't a massive sport here in Scotland but it is popular and there are a lot of dedicated volunteers so youngsters can do the sport for basically minimal cost and either make it a family event or go through their club and go along with their friends to races. Clubs hire transport to go to cross country and track meets for example. The cost is negligible. Theres often no selection at junior level - if you want to run, you can run. Theres also relatively little pressure on young athletes.
Track sessions are hard but mileage isn't too high at junior and young senior level.
Weather conditions are often tough. There often aren't any good tracks to train on in some areas.
Physically, a lot of Scottish youngsters (they're not all fat) are naturally skinny with long legs, no matter how tall they are. Increasingly, there are a lot of tall youngsters with narrow hips but strong legs. But not ridiculously tall.
Not a flat country so many have some experience of hillwalking and mountain hiking even when very young.
