With steady training, I think he could manage coming through 1:59 at the BU track and then we'd have to see how much hay was left in the old Jayhawker so to speak. Knowing Ryun and his new coach Ritz, I think we will be pleasantly surprised.

I recall him saying that he had run 60mpw during the 2 years leading up to turning 40. I saw him run a 4:30 at an indoor meet on TV but don’t think he ever approached 4:20 after that.
Not sure I believe this. What TV channel was this on and who was announcing? I maintain a nearly perfect database of all televised track meets going back nearly 50 years and this is not coming up in any query I have tried so far.

Maybe you are simply un-American. Because I'm a believer in America and it doesn't get more American than Mr. Kansas himself walking into the BU Track with Ritz at his side, super shoes on, cruising through 1:59 and unleashing that kick with two laps to go to go sub 4 for the FULL MILE (not 1600, those don't count).
The only question I have, and maybe we've come full circle, but who has the better kick with 200m to go?

Considering nobody has broken 4 in the 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, or 70 category, including Ryun in which super shoes have existed since he's been 70, then no chance.
I've seen some really stupid supershoes threads but this one sets a world record. For Ryun to run sub-4 the shoes would have to give you at least minute and a half over a mile. We should see Jakob run sub-three real soon. Maybe he's really only a 4.30 miler - or even 5min?

You do know that the 800m age group record for a 60 year old is 2.08? And you think a long-retired 75 year old could run 1.59 en route to a sub-4 mile. You need to return to planet earth.

Little known (realized) fact. Ryun’s fastest mile was run on a cinder track despite the fact that he competed on both cinder and synthetic.
Ryun’s mile WR was finally broken on 17 May 1975 by .01 seconds by Filbert Bayi (first mile WR on a synthetic track. 8 years after Ryun’s WR and 7 years after the first synthetic tracks started showing up.
