You are wrong. I have watched the race dozens of times and saaaa is correct. Ngeny is gapped slightly, perhaps by 3-4 meters, with around 250m to go, but at all other points of the race he is right behind El Guerrouj. He makes up a bit of ground around the turn and then with between 50-80m to go his front foot pulls even with El Guerrouj's torso. That is as close as he gets.

I suppose we might count El Guerrouj's 1:46 in Athens as a "PR." He said once when he was interviewed by Sebastian Coe that he thought he could drop a 1:41 or a 1:42 if he had trained for it. He was a second faster than Morceli over 1500, and Morceli ran 1:44, plus guys like Baala and Chirchir who are much slower than El Guerrouj over 1500 have run 1:43. He also has 47 second 400 speed so I imagine he could probably do a 1:42.
Paul Tergat still has the record in my mind, although Wanjiru ran 59:16 (erasing Tergat's official 59:17 mark) and Tadesse ran 59:05 to get Tergat's 59:06 slightly downhill mark.
In 1996 at the Stramilano half marathon Tergat ran 58:51 for 21,049 meters. Unfortunately a half marathon is 21,098 meters. The course was 49 meters short, which, at his pace, should have taken only about 8 seconds.
Along the way he broke nearly every other shorter record en route, recording a sick 21:55 at 8K, for instance, and something around 41-high for 15K.

Its no different than just about any other world record attempt, track or road. And they have their place in running, as they can be just as exciting as "real races."
Personally, I'd rather watch someone like Geb bust his ass for 13.1 miles than see some tactical race where everyone holds back and waits to see who has the best finishing kick.

granted, their times were slower, but that was before much of today's current training knowledge and technology
for Nurmi, 9 solo golds, plus 3 more team golds, and he was barred from LA in 32, plus he set world records from 1500 to 20K
he could kick your ass to if he was still alive
for Zapotek, what mroe can be said about him winning the distance triple plus at least 14 world records
Rodgers didn't have a great range, but 4 Bostons and NY's is impressive, he also won bunches of other road races and set the hour record, and he has done quite a bit as he has aged; masters and age group
El G, Kenny B, Geb, and Tergat will all go down as greats, but don't forget the legends of the past
So why not have him just hop on a "certified" treadmill set to cover 13.1 miles in 59:15?
sorry dude - Bill Rodgers does not belong in this group. I might grant you Paavo Nurmi and Emil Zapotek but what the hell does 4 Bostons and NY's mean... Geb could have had 4 Bostons and NY's, instead he's was busy running stellar times on the track and not focusing on the American-centralized road races

what i want to see is geb have to get on a bus, schlep out to the start of the race, stand in line at the port-o-john, deal with passive aggressive race volunteers, stand around while pointless sponsor thank you's go on, hear the race directors daughter sing the national anthem, elbow past the seventh grader on the starting line, and run 59:15.
thats what i want to see.
