This is San Francisco virtue signaling, let them figure out how to financially make this happen if this is how they feel. You feel the $5 million figure is insufficient, so I am curious what amount you feel would be sufficient. My ancestors were mostly poor whites and to the best of my knowledge never owned slaves in America (they may have owned them or been them at points in their home countries somewhere in their history). None ever accumulated an estate worth anywhere near $5 million in today's dollars, and it definitely has not made its way to my pocketbook. In fact, if you take the total wealth of the entire USA $145,793,000,000,000 and divide it by the total number of residents, you get about $440,000 per resident. Am I entitled to reparations from the UK government due to their policy failures during the Potato Famine that motivated my ancestors to come to this country.

I don't know enough to dispute the damages/reparations $5 million number, but I know that compound interest over decades can add up to a LOT of money. What I want to know is who are the people who have to pay the award? I think it should only be people who were involved in the oppression. If you can prove by a preponderance of the evidence that you are not racist against blacks and were not in the relevant past, you should be legally excluded from the liable class.
