Agreed. She is immensely talented and will always be one of the greatest high school distance runners. She chose to go in another direction and is getting her degree from a top school, focussing on other things. Seems like she made a great choice for her.

OH big harm to the Dartmouth coaches. They used their preferential pick to get her admitted and she barely tried. Within 2 years they were fired because the team wasn't performing. You bet they know now they were played. If they had used that admission waiver on someone else, they still would be employed.
Thoughtful point and I am usually of the viewpoint that it is difficult to determine which HS stars will translate to college, but was it not general consensus (and even posted on her own Instagram) that Lane would not be 'right' for college. Similarly it appears Grace Ping - OSU and Angelina Perez - Fl may never return to form. When there is plenty of public knowledge available, I believe it is 'buyer beware' for coaches and they are well aware of the risk they are taking.
I hope Ping, Perez and even Lane are able to still succeed with college running, I just am aware it's unlikely.

I wonder if there ever was a national champion who went down so fast. Two time national champion and in 2 years she was completely out of the sport.

you are blaming the coaches being fired on one runner not performing? that's ludicrous. Coaches don't have a crystal ball and you have no clue what went on behind the scenes. If they were let go there is probably a lot more to it then one runner not panning out.
We all know about tuohy and chimel success but from my years of watching so cal runners and coaching in her small school division I don’t think Mia Barnett has never had an injury. That plays a big role.

She struggled and stopped in college and now made comeback as an adult. Like Lane she was also prudent to choose a strong academic school - Duke. She didn't just get admissions help, she had a scholarship.

Totally unfair to blame Claudia. First off, she missed almost her entire junior spring track season, and her times that spring were nowhere near her best, and then she missed her entire senior xc season. All of this was before she “signed” with Dartmouth. The coaches had ample warning that she was struggling with injury and maybe with motivation and they selected her anyway. We have no idea what she told them. Maybe she told them there was a good chance she would not or could not run in the end and they decided to take a chance. Based on Claudia’s performances in early/mid high school a place like Dartmouth would have been far below her level. I mean she was the fastest girl in the nation, or just behind Tuohy, and one of the fastest HS girls ever.

Yes, of course you are right. The Ivy League has it shares of notable stars, but it would be unusual that the Claudia Lane of her junior year xc exploits would choose Dartmouth these days. I’m not sure any of the women you listed above approached Claudia’s early/mid HS accomplishments in hs. She is probably the goat HS girl xc runner for California.

Plus, I believe Brasovan has been in the top 3 in multiple national trail and mountain national championships . And she was a complete underdog at the national championship race. The announcers weren't even sure who she was. It was like lightning struck one day for her. Claudia Lane was a prohibitive favorite before both national championships. The only question was by how much she would win.

I'm not sure who Collierr is. But everybody else on the list but Baxter and Trotter had at least some fame. I've discussed Brasovan. Kroger, Fraiser, and Murphy were D1 All Americans. But nobody else just jogged one year of JV cross country and hung up her flats. Some day the story would make a good book.

Not sure kroeger belongs on this list. She finished top 25 in NCAA xc twice (21 and 24 as a junior and senior respectively). And 24th was actually an off day for her as she had beaten hasay (3rd that year) to win PAC 12s a few weeks earlier and then got 2nd in the 5k at indoor nationals a few months later.
