I got a T-shirt from Hometown Apparel with "Chesterton" across the chest, not because of any affiliation with Chesterton, Indiana, but because G. K. Chesterton is my favorite writer.
Because wearing the team jersey without a name looks a little funny (depending on the jersey), and putting your own name on it is a bit narcissistic... That's all really.
You don't feel like you're worshipping some other guy?
I think part of the sentiment about it being lame is that the person wearing it is usually sedentary. If you like sports so much as a to essentially wear a costume, then maybe do sports. Ya know?
I’d wager a big percentage of the people watching a Diamond League meet on TV are currently running themselves at some level. General NFL audience is pre-diabetic.
With football in particular, it definitely has a sort of pathetic vibe. I get a shirt or whatever, but to actually dress up like you’re playing and having a guys name on your shirt, that’s weird. People wear them out in public during the off season. People make fun of baseball managers wearing a uniform, they are paid by the team, actually go on the field, etc.
No question though, those jersey wearing has-beens have way more fun than me.

I think most people who do it have never played sports. And it screams insecurity.
Bill Burr has a hilarious bit where he says that if you wear a jersey or shirt with someone else's name on the back of it, that guy should be able to F you. bahahahaha!

This is a discussion board, and in it, we discuss things. Some things might be of interest to you, some things might not be. This sounds like one that is of no interest to you. You could find another thread to be in.
For the topic at hand, no I would never wear a sports jersey with someone's name on it. I'm 48 years old and take pride in WHAT I DO and WHO I AM not what I "root for" or to celebrate some other person's accomplishments. Seriously, the more rabid a fan is, the more I know they have nothing going on in life. I don't mean to say they don't potentially have a good career, but who cares about that? Who are you outside of your job?
For me, a person that does things, not cheer for others.
Even the concept is off putting to me, as if I should give 2 craps about what a pro team does. I mean the players aren't even local, why would I care about the Columbus Bluejackets for instance (I'm from Columbus)?
Now I am into Mountain Biking, so I would concievably wear a brand jersey, say "Santa Cruz" if I rode Santa Cruz bikes. But the distinction is really that I am a direct participant in the sport, and when wearing it, it would be while on the bike.
Folks that wear Nascar jackets are the funniest of all. Clearly those people have never raced a car, and the jackets are literally covered with a dozen or more logos from all the sponsors. Imagine being such a sucker that you are walking around celebrating the fact you're a billboard for consumerism.

Supporting a local sports team doesn’t come off as insecurity to me. Your being so bothered by it, does.

Supporting a local sports team is fine, but those who wear a jersey with another man's name on the back screams insecurity. These people are likely those who won't show up for work their team loses.
