Sad news. I saw him on the course last year, with a bunch of runners lined up for selfies with him! In the middle of the Boston Marathon! If we were allowed timeouts in running, I would have gotten one, too.

There was considerable advance notice about Spencer and his deteriorating condition. Compare that to Fred La Marmotte, the Ground Hog of Quebec. The crowd that gathered on the morning of February 2 to witness his prediction about continued winter or early spring were stunned to hear the news of his death.
