They are "girls" in this context. If some assistant coach is 23 and the athletes are 19, maybe that is different. But in the multitude of cases where the coach is 47 and the athlete is 19-22, it is just wrong. Again, we all know this but some people play dumb (common on Letsrun) to justify something they want to be true. An old coach wants it to be okay, but it isn't.
If you have to say, "technically they are women" then you know you are splitting hairs. College kids are not "real grown ups" and we all know that. That is why we call them "college kids."
Not to mention that the whole issue of the power dynamic is at the crux of this issue. That is why coaches, teachers, professors, supervisors, doctors, and counselors shouldn't date athletes, students, employees, or patients. Duh.
