Yeah so, Grant Fisher is better than Craig Mottram ever was. He just doesn’t have an Aussie accent, a ratty Aussie haircut, and doesn’t give cool little sound bites like Mottram. And so what?
show me fishers Bronze medal in WC 5k against the deepest groups of Africans the sport ever saw….
show me fishers wins against Bekele, and Geb in the 5k?
hell show me how fisher actually ran races and not time trials
Mottram did that all in the PRE super shoe / super tracks era
mottram RACED…. Fisher time trialed.
motttam was at WXC every year duking it out. Fisher time trials three times a year. If that
I like how you add extra comma, don’t add commas and have extra periods all just randomly placed. America, this is our future. “It’s just the internet. I’m not writing a book.”
Mottram’s best Olympic finish was 8th. Fisher placed 5th in his first Olympic appearance. Fisher is better.
Now do World Championships.
Fisher is an incredible athlete and a class act, but Mottram is ahead of him and it's not even a debate.
Gladly. Fisher already has two top 6 finishes at the world championships. In his entire career, Mottram only had one. Fisher has lined up against stacked fields at the world championships, taking on and defeating the world record holder and reigning Olympic champions. Mottram lucked out from Bekele not contesting the 5K in 2005. Fisher is better.
Let me preface by saying Mottram was dominate on the world stage at Grand Prix meets and at championship meets when NO one was at anything above 1500m. but his 2006 season…
I can’t find or recall what he did that indoor season but he had the Commonwealth Games in his home time in mid March he was trying to hit an early season peak for.
March 9, 2006 sets an Australian record of 2k in 4:50
March 20,2006 runs 12:58 for a silver in the 5k in commonwealth games in one of the best championship races ever.
March 25, 2006 falls in 1500 of commonwealth games
then here is what separate Mottram from weak runners of today…after the commonwealth games instead of shutting it down and focusing on summer campaign Mottram boarded a plane and went to Japan and ran the world XC short course finishing 11th.
couple wks later and goes to NY and runs a 28:13 in Central Park in the healthy Kidney race…. Races the European season that summer and to top it off goes to the World Cup in September and did something NO ONE and I mean NO ONE did and that was beat Bekele and win the 3k in 7:32.
long story short, you’d never see the soft Americans run and race as much as Mottram did. Skipping big meets and championships for time trials has made the sport weak.

Obviously doping. Nobody has a breakout season like that without drugs.

There is some ridiculous nostalgia in this thread. Mottram has 1 top 6 finish in a global outdoor track final, Fisher already has 3 at age 25. Fisher's PRs are much better, he consistently put up top 3 finishes last year on the DL, and is ranked 7th all time at 10,000m and 12th all time at 5,000m.
But yeah, he gave a good quote and had a sweet haircut so people feel the need to inflate his career.
In that 5 year span he competed in: Olympics, outdoor WC, indoor WC, World XC short & long, Diamond Leagues, national championships (xc/track), and road races.
If the intent of this thread is to commend him on his willingness to race in almost any distance/discipline, then yes, I commend you Craig Mottram.
Thank u! This was never about Mottram vs Grant Fisher…
this was about showing the toughness and willingness of Mottram to perform! and not saving himself for time trials.
But going back to Grant fisher… do ppl honestly think the likes of him would exist if not for ppl like Mottram didn’t come beforehand? It’s a stupid comparison bc the era and technology doesn’t make it comparable.

You used Mottram in an attempt to put down what you deemed to be “soft Americans.” I will not tolerate American bashing on this board.
Mottram himself was very likely inspired by an American: Bob Kennedy
We are talking about Mottram's Comm games 5k and Pre 2 mile more than 15 years later. What race has Fischer run that we will talk about in 15 years? Time trial 10k? Yeah right. People remember emotional performances, not fast times.
What's this craziness? We'll be talking about Fishers 3,5&10 performances for 50 years. And his two stellar and dramatic performances in the WCs. That 5000 was unbelievable. Obviously Fisher should have been in the top 3 but stepping on the rail and barely saving himself still salvaged 6th.
Um, Grant Fisher surpassed Mottrams achievements many times over in 2022. Fisher is actually one of the all time greats in 5000 & 10000 now.
All time greats? Ummmm... no global medal yet at age 25, over 3 seconds per mile behind the two WRs. And you are comparing him to Bekele and Haile and Farah and Cheptegei. Sure, why not, fans will be fans.
Did you know that the only two people ahead of Fisher in all of 3000, 5000, and 10000m runs are Bekele and Geb. That's it. Not even Chep has bettered Fishers 7:28. You think we're not going to be fans? Wtf
You could argue that this type of over-racing is why his career tanked over the following years..... like Ritz under Wetmore/Salazar and Solinsky and Tegenkamp under Schumacher (and Hall under Mahon/& Coach THE LORD THY GOD....)
one good year followed by years of chronic career-ending injuries.... chronic fatigue
Distance running is an unhealthy, delusional sport industry dominated by doping Kenyans and Ethiopians who RUN EVERY DAY on soft surfaces and DIRT ROADS......
I can’t help it bc Americans are soft and don’t race…. And there lies the problem.
truth hurts.
How can Americans be soft when Americans have won more medals in the 800-marathon in the last 20 years than any country other than Kenya and Ethiopia. Many more medals than Australia!

You do have 12 times the population of Australia, 6 times the population of Kenya and 3 times the population of Ethiopia.
Not to mention, your HDI absolutely dwarfs that of the latter two nations.
