I was having the same discussion with my brother and the general consensus is that it has to be settled. We could go on for four hours without a winner hence the penalty.

The Golden goal rule was also used in the world cups of 1998 and 2002, and most fans didn’t like them. They did away with them after 2002.

Penalty shootouts are NOT luck. Watch the replays in slow motion. The Argentine players practice faking the goalkeeper to get him to flinch and show where he’s going. It’s risky, because if you slow your momentum the shot isn’t as fast and the goalkeeper gets the advantage. I’ve watched every World Cup knockout stage match since 1986. PK shootouts are one of the best ways to finish a high intensity game.

What do you mean “expand goals”? Like in overtime if the NBA the hoop should raise to 10’5”; if the NHL the net gets wider? If NFL the goal posts narrow? Are you sober?

My #1 preference for all games in the World Cup - but particularly the final - is simple - play until their is a goal with normal goal posts. But the criticism is "but people might get hurt." My response. Who cares? It's the world cup final.

But in response to that criticism, i have offered the expanded goal option.

Did you see what the Argentine goalkeeper did in the tournament, some saves he had in the game and in today's PKs? What is that, not part of the futbol? It was widely known that Argentina had the odds advantage if the game went to PK. France had lightning-attacking speed and efficiency. That can all affect the strategy for a tough game. It can affect offense, defense, and substitutions of talent. If PK are meaningless why were most moderately knowledgeable fans confident that the game was Argentina's at the start of them?

I strongly recommend that Rojo listens to Ross Tucker's latest Real Science of Sport podcast special on penalty kicks. It dispels the myth that penalties are 'luck' and talks about the differing tactics of either goalkeeper independent (aim for a spot and shoot) or goalkeeper dependent (wait for goalkeeper to move then hit it in opposite direction) penalties. The latter being the single most useful yet difficult skill a striker can have in the penalty scenario. Remember penalties often happen during matches naturally (there were three during final!) so it's not like it's some completely obtuse element, like your expanding goal thing would be.

IIRC there was of course also the danger that teams would play very defensively during extension to avoid the others scoring a golden goal, and in general it could always go to penalties anyway if no goal was scored. I am not that fond of penalties but I totally agree that it is not dumb luck and I didn't much like golden goal either.

It seems to me that for Americans to enjoy football the rules should be changed.

A goal should be worth 17 points.

The goal should be the width of the pitch.

There should be timeouts for adverts every time play stops.

Another thing that people who have never played the game properly need to do is ask someone to kick them in the shin area as hard as they can. Then realise that this typically happens multiple times a game. Yes players also cheat and nobody likes that, stop acting like you have discovered some amazing truth nobody understands then rolling around feigning outrage on internet forums.

So your solution involves changing the goal equipment so that it can be widened progressively? Why not make tracks where we can bank the turns with hydraulics on the last lap? Why not have moving walkways on cross country courses? (I would use a basketball analogy but I know rojo hates basketball for cultural reasons.)
