He paced half of it with Isaiah Labra, Southern Utah athlete.. I was there this morning and I was surprised when I saw Josh Kerr lol. It was a fast field! The race is fast for the first 8 miles or so then the "rolling hills" through Carmel Valley make it a good effort.
lmao yea, “half of it” except I saw them at mile 12. Isaiah is also not in the results so seems like we got two serious runners banditing a local, poorly produced HM. I guess one is a college student and the other is not quite elite enough to earn good money so it’s understandable why the $150 entry fee would sting.
I’ve done the race a few times, it’s net downhill but the uphills and turns make it a real effort, I think a pancake flat course is faster.
really solid effort from Josh. Impressive for a 15 guy. Solid effort from Henry Wynne as well.
Absolutely not true. You way underestimate how much difference the downhill makes.
I raced Sergio a couple of years ago and he was nowhere near 62min form. Clearly he is in much better shape now and doing amazingly for 41. But this is more like a 65 on a flat course.
Having raced it I would say this course aids you between 30-90seconds depending on how well you run downhills. There are uphills and tight u-turns, which slow you down significantly. In addition, the bigger downhills are in the first half of the race and they sap your quads for the later stages.

I've run this race twice and let me tell you it's fast AF. Sergio and even Hall are great runners but neither are even close to sub 64 to be fair. The Downhill is truly significant because it allows you to float for a long period of time with only a few miles that have a few speed bumps here and there. It's not a legal course for a reason. It drops nearly 700 feet "net"!
that tracks with the 30-90sec advantage on this course. keep in mind that you spend less time descending at higher speeds than you do climbing the ~350 ft or so over the course, point being is you’re getting an advantage for a smaller amount of time compared to the amount of time that you’re at a disadvantage. The substantial “net” drop is a bit deceiving in that regard.

Americans astonished as usual by track athletes actually racing, never mind racing for winter strength in a different event. Remind me of how many times Mu and McLoughlin raced last year again.
I don't know if I'm more surprised by Josh's time, or that we don't have a comprehensive review of how Ovett was better running a half in 1978 or whenever and was 47.67cm from a curb on one corner.

Yeah look at the old logs of guys like marathoner Bill Rodgers and miler Steve Scott. They raced a ton and often in their non specialties. They were often crushed but didn’t care. Racing is fun and the best “workout” you can put in. Rodgers would race indoors and Scott would tons of 10ks. Could you imagine the scrutiny these guys would get on the internet today? I’ll tell ya technology is not all its cracked up to be.
