Which Ivy League school has the best training environment?

I don't know where the Harvard team does most of its distance runs but running along the Charles River is quite nice and while not really "trails" per se there is a dirt path and some grass sections next to the cement trail nearly the entire way around the Charles. [ and those are some long Loops one can do] You can be on dirt virtually the whole way. Very flat.

Lived in Ithaca for several years, ran faster than rojo did, and made more money than he while working at Cornell. Let that be known.

Been to Princeton several times and have run around campus some, although mostly in an outlying town, and it reminded me a bit of the Ithaca area, but not as hilly. I'd have to give the nod to Cornell.

Most of your list is not even close to the hood. Columbia??? New Haven is fine, especially around Yale. WashU is between an upscale suburb and a park, also fine. I swear some conservatives are the biggest wimps I’ve ever met.

Harvard has lots of good running spots nearby, but no trails without driving (which they do, I see them at battle road often). But then winter running is much easier than Cornell or Dartmouth, I’d guess.

I thought it was Vanderbilt? I’ve heard people refer to Wake Forest as the Harvard of the south as well, so all you Southerners can just sort this out.

You’re giving me flashbacks of when I used to work with a guy from Duke University. He was the biggest tool and a massive a**hole. He tried to boss around everyone in our office although nobody really reported to him.

His salary is public, so I get a big kick out of knowing that I make more money than he does and I went to a big public school where the ACT requirement was 21.

columbia is increasingly dangerous and borders harlem, which has tons of crime and is worse than 10 years ago. Been tons of murders of students, to note below. People keep claiming its safe but its really not....you need to be on your guard in upper manhattan at all times.

I says no I never had university advantages because at Harvard they teach you how to go for a swim at night without knowing how to swim and at Sewanee they dont even teach you what water is.

Let’s be honest - colleges like San Jose state, University of Portland, and UTEP are in safe urban areas.

My favorite running that I have done was in Ithaca between April and October. My least favorite running that I have done was in Ithaca between December and February. November and March? Depends on the year. Trails are awesome, but not accessible with feet of snow on top of them.

The snow hardly covers anything anymore.

no it shouldn’t cause the Ivy League is a historical sports conference . Duke is better off sticking to the ACC.

I’m a sub-sub-sub elite local hobby-jogger at Cornell. The country roads out here are amazing. You could do a different loop every day and never get bored. Most of them get plowed hard all winter long. Just like rojo back in the day.

Oh, and you get used to the hills.

Hey that just jogged my memory! We did have some pretty good road loops out there in the Winter....one we called "Stonecar" - it was like a 15-18-miler (depending on the variation) and had fairly significant elevation gain. Couple times some guys and I did it in a blizzard basically which was a little rough....but overall stuff did get plowed. "3rd sock" kinda weather a lot of days though. "Burns" trail rec area and other stuff towards Ithaca college too was decent most of the winter too. As well as out towards Dryden and Cayuga Heights.

I also remember running on the trails a lot in the winter (sometimes in ankle to knee deep snow in some places though!). There would always be a handful of days in the winter where we'd stay in Barton Hall on an easy mileage day and run laps around the indoor track facility because it was too cold and snowy...but most days we were outside on the country roads with some trail variations (esp Sapsucker woods area and all around North Campus).

Much better than training in Michigan winters IMO! Now in Colorado I'm getting soft though.

Ellis Hollow, Mount Pleasant, Cayuga Heights, Black Diamond, Sapsucker.. the list goes on and on! Honestly not a bad place to train - I’ll take good weather 9/12 months.

Tons of murders of students? There have been like a handful over the last 20-30 years. Agreed that any is too many, but hardly "tons". I feel safer in morningside heights than New Haven
