"I don't want to like call anyone out but for example Ian Butler has run like 14:30 or something in the 5K, I think I lapped him in the LA 5K last year, but he's run 2:09 so I feel like there's so many different types of athletes that kind of find their way to the marathon. Some people have success that you wouldn't think, so then others for example; Brett Robinson has run sub 60 in the half, he's run 13-low and 27-low in the 10K but he's only just run quicker than you after like 6 Marathons, and so people that you think on the track might run really well, like Bekele for example, hasn't really put it together in a Marathon, and then others who haven't been great track runners can really put it together"
Right sentiment, horrific example using Bekele.... 2:01:41????
As you said the point is right, but a bad example - so obviously not the worst take of all time (as many takes also mis the point too). But even then Bekele held the 10,000 record for 15 years at 26:17, so expectations are extremely high. Over his entire career he has had 2 great marathons. In the world marathon majors he has 2 wins and 6 finishes outside the top 2 (see marathon record below). So yes while he did eventually put it together for the 2:01:41, its not like hes consistently put it together at the level you'd expect given his 10k. Honestly, its a bad example because he entered the marathon quite late, so hasn't run it all that much, but still we could surely think of worse examples, e.g. if he said kipchoge or something.

2019: 1st Berlin, 2:01:41
2018: 6th London, 2:08:53
2016: 3rd London, 1st Berlin (SB 2:03:03)
2015: DNF Dubai
2014: 4th Chicago, 1st Paris (SB 2:05:04)
Crazy to think he’s been running marathons for 9 years. Given his track record it’s been pretty disappointing
When I was getting recruited out of school a coach told me that with my 400 speed (~50) and endurance from cross country I could end up being as good Galen Rupp with more mileage
needless to say I am not close to Galen Rupp’s speed
