No one would believe it wise to train mixed martial arts athletes and/or boxers via video chat, email, text messages or phone calls but absent coaches have sold too many in T&F community on the idea that T&F does not need to be done face to face.
There are rules in other pro sports where coaches aren't allowed to have their athletes practice year round. They then have to report back for training camp.
Engels was probably just in a base building phase at altitude, maybe not even doing workouts yet.
He needs to grow up and learn how to take care of himself without a babysitter. Does he expect his coach to bike along side him every single run?
Yeah, sounds like he wants that for workouts anyway. It's hard to improve on your own even if you're the most self-motivated person.
He says the conversation took a minute and a half and he was rambling and emotional while Pete Julian said about 10 words. Maybe Julian was choked up too, but from a coach of 5 years, I would want some substantial words of encouragement to put me at ease and absolve me of any guilt for the decision. It doesn't seem like it's out of nowhere.

Newsflash: if someone you care about brings news like this sometimes it’s better to say less until you’ve had time to reflect instead of blurting out the first thing that comes to mind.

That's true, esp if you have a reserved personality and need time to absorb the news. But Letsrun has known for a week, maybe two, and if they'd had a follow-up conversation or even text, I don't think Craig would've described the conversation in that way without further detail.

Exactly. It’s being the adult/boss/leader in the room. Very few have this level of restraint anymore.
News flash. Engles did not make the Olympic team, putting him on JV status in that team. Jillian was getting his varsity squad ready and sending Engles to flagstaff for a couple of months to toughen up and train alone was a good plan. Instead, Engles cries himself a river and trains with the girls team.
Imagine complaining about being sent on an all expenses altitude training camp!
Engles needs some perspective on life. He’s too soft and flaky. He’s a boy in an almost man’s body. He’s more concerned about his hair and mustache.
Can you imagine Pre preening his hair to the camera with a stupid grin on his face at the start line of a race.
Blankenship has half Engles talent and he got to the Olympic 1500m final on grit.
You also learn about his last-minute trip to Portugal this year where he bought his ticket en route to the airport and how he ran pretty darn fast post-trip while training with the girls of the UAC.
Women, you backwards fossil.
I'm as liberal as the next guy but why again can we not say girls? We say "boys" when talking about activities and such in a light hearted manner? "Womens division", "womens shot put", "womens golf" yes, but you can hang out with "the girls"! Lighten up man, you give progressives a bad name.

He does seem a bit distracted by himself, maybe flaky? But I have an issue with arm chair runners calling anyone who has won nationals and made a worlds team and finished 7th...soft! We should ALL be so soft. These are hard dudes.
Engles obviously has talent and has underperformed. Why is him saying that he doesn't like the setup and dynamic with Pete an issue? Like if I had an absent boss and the company I was working for was not fitting with my skills and preferences I would go find another job. Why is this different? Additionally- none of you pay his salary? He's not an elected official! If he's operating within his contract, he has the liberty to make whatever move is best for him.
Sounds like he wants more face time and hands on training, and he'll get that with new coach. I would much prefer a runner explain their moves than just be entirely silent.
Say what you want about Engels, but this was a great interview. We are always bashing the athletes for saying nothing of meaning and speaking in platitudes, and now when Engels tells us something real about his state of mind, we trash him too.
Yeah I would never badmouth a coach who has several ties to grey area doping.
No reason to drag Schumacher and Ritz into this. lolz.
Seriously y’all. Engels didn’t need to do Julian like that. Julian is there for his team and works as hard as anyone. Not really a fair portrayal at all.
Sounds like Julian LITERALLY was not there for his team.
Remember when he celebrated mid race then got beat?
Why would Julian waste time on that clown?
Going to his college coach is like Drew Hunter going to his mom
bro it was Beamish there's nothing you can do if he's kicking you down the last 100, he outkicked Hoare, Teare, and Hocker coming outta nowhere
I'm hoping the coaching change will get him back to his best. From the interviews I've heard it seems like he's lost focus a lot since 2019, but even so he's run 3:33 and came 4th at the trials, so maybe he's got more to give still.
BRO it doesn't matter who it was, Engels started to celebrate still on the turn. Engels has run 3 seconds faster than Beamish in both the 1500 and the mile.
I guarantee you Julian is happy to have Engels leave, Engels is DONE in this sport.

He LITERALLY was with his team prepping for the Olympics and Engels had a coach in Flagstaff the entire time.
