Multiple high-profile conservatives have created 'free speech' Twitter clones, including Trump himself. Every single one of them is a failure. Can somebody here explain to me why Twitter haters are so obsessed with its affairs? Why are you not content with your right-wing owned, 'uncensored' Twitter alternatives that you believe are the ideal social media platform?
It's a difficult concept for a 'liberal' to understand, but Conservatives don't actually enjoy circle jerk echo chambers. They rrcognize debate is essential in a democracy, including the 21st century town square.

Liberals get outraged by anything that isn't a "circle jerk echo chamber".
It is amazing how uniform the opinions of people on the left are. It's like a hive mind of stupidity.
Libs have lost their minds because a guy that is not a raging leftist has said he will allow anyone to speak.
It's not like Musk is some raging right winger, or religious whacko.
Instant down vote from one of raging leftists. Too funny.
Waiting for the "He just wants people to use the N word w/o repercussions!" post...
I'm sure it's coming...
If anyone read what he posted to advertisers it sounds like a very open but very sensible position to take, a position that most Americans have agree with for many years prior to the "Marxist-woke-ism" stuff that's come into fashion with the Left over the past decade.

But you're not a neutral party looking at both sides to form an opinion; you have a specific viewpoint and are trying to persuade other people to accept that viewpoint. In an ideal scenario everyone would agree with your argument, yet when you're in this situation you pejoratively describe it as a "circle jerk echo chamber". Why is this?
By "debate" do you mean "imposing my viewpoints on people who do not wish to engage with me"? Because if they wanted to debate the matter then they would have followed you to these 'uncensored' platforms.

Twitter has never been a very profitable media company. The format is argumentation based and it doesn't have the click-troughs of other internet media. it is useful for brand-building, but this spendndeclines in a recession.
Musk has a lot of work to do. Internet brands don't last forever-look at Myspace and Meta's recent quarter.
If Musk can change things, count me as surprised, but if he does, it will be quite a turnaround.
Twitter is only important to a couple million people who are terminally obsessed with twitter. The vast majority of Americans do not browse twitter and do not care what happens on there.
That's true. But the millions of people who are on Twitter - and on the platform a whole lot - include a majority of people who work for/run the mainstream media and occupy positions of power and influence in society and politics. And many of those people think that what is said on Twitter by its users, and what the censorious Twitter rules have allowed to be said on the platform, accurately reflect the views of the general public.
So even though the vast majority of Americans don't browse Twitter and don't care what happens on there, we are all very much affected by what happens on Twitter.
One of the reasons that the mainstream media, the Democratic party, the Biden White House are so out of touch with how the bulk of the population feel about many so-called "woke" policies and positions is that Twitter has had a policy of banning even centrist and "liberal"/left-leaning users who don't totally toe the line on every aspect of the so-called "woke" agenda.
For example, legions of generally left-leaning, liberal-minded women and men with so-called "gender critical feminist" views have been banned from Twitter for pointing out that people like Lia Thomas, Laurel Hubbard, CeCe Telfer and Rachel Levine are all adult males - and for saying that adult, adolescent and middle school-age males don't belong in women's and girls' sports, women's and girls' locker rooms, women's toilets, women's rape crisis centers, battered women's refuges, women's shelters, women's prisons, women's hospital wards, etc.
But today, many of the previously-banned "gender criticals" are back on the platform and they're having a field day. So too are many people who have remained on Twitter all along but have been self-censoring so as not to run afoul of Twitter's rules that say "misgendering" (particularly of males) is "hateful" and impermissible, but which at the same time have allowed Twitter users to hurl misogynistic (and ageist) abuse at women - and to post pornographic content containing images of women and children being sexually abused.

The lack of self-awareness you people have is astounding.
Your post is complete projection.
Left wing speakers don't get banned. Left wing speakers don't get assaulted on college campuses and shouted down by mobs.
Leftists do not want to debate. They can't win debates because their ideas are demonstrably garbage.
Including the head of censorship, as well as the guy who banned the POTUS (whilst still allowing the Taliban's official account, Iran's etc. etc.)
Now you lefties don't go complaining about any of this, if you wanted Twitter to remain anti-free speech and a woke 'safe space' you can go start up your own micro-blogging social media site. I hear Parler is up for sale.
The winds of change are blowing through the corridors of Twitter HQ! Roar glorious Elon the African giant! This is the American dream personified! I can't help but savour this moment as I sit here waiting for my cheuque on the 1st from the generous American people. I'm reflecting back on the nasty things I had to suck to get my piece of the American dream. My 4th US born child will be a mixed race!

They think the same thing about your ideas, which is why they are not interested in spending time on Gab/Parler/Truth Social/etc. Why are you so interested in spending time on platforms full of people you vehemently dislike?
I thought that Musk was supposed to have a high degree of business acumen. This is not a good purchase - at least at the amount he made. I fail to see how he will get his ROI. Something that isn't dying, like Instagram, would have bee a much better buy.
Cleaning out the C-suite is standard procedure when there is a corporate acquisition. The buyer is expected to clean house in order to put their stamp on the leadership team so they can claim credit for changes that improve the company's share price. And the Twitter execs are getting golden parachutes valued at $122 mil total.
But Musk is not the sole owner of twitter after the buyout. Musk is actually relying on funding from Larry Ellison, Qatar and even the Saudis. Musk is the controlling shareholder, but he has to answer to his funders and the remaining shareholders (Saudis retained the largest interest of the shareholders who are not selling to Musk). So, twitter is not going to be Musk's play toy. He has to make a profit. And that means he has to maintain revenue, which means keeping sponsors happy or finding a way to charge users. The latter being as likely as a self driving Tesla driving across the US without running over anyone.
Musk is going to get some traction by letting back in the many users that twitter banned for life. But if the unbanning slants too much to the right, then twitter may quickly become the land of Pepes and Groypers with normal people fleeing to startups like Mastodon. If there is a mass migration, twitter is going to lose huge sums and Musk's backers will revolt against him. At that point, twitter may go the way of myspace.

I'm not talking about morons on the internet. Intellectuals on the left avoid debate at universities. They declare themselves to be right and then refuse to acknowledge any other opinions.
If they thought their oppositions ideas were garbage they would debate and prove it.
