Sweet Jesus people, don't cheap out on hotels. You don't need to go 5 stars but <$100 motel rooms are for heroin addicts. At the very least find a less expensive Marriott property like Courtyard. It isn't extravagant but you won't get a contact disease either.

F*ck that. I'll just sleep in my car. I know it's clean in there,
I'm not sure what happened to hotel/motel rooms but I think the prices went way up after Covid.
You used to be able to get nice hotel via priceline for like under $150.
My kids nanny said they were going to fly to Florida for vacation instead of going to the beach in NJ because shitty motels on the beach were like $550 a night.
Net they might be a little more having to get plane tickets but they'd get Florida beaches instead of NJ.
Motel rates are NOT unreasonably expensive if people are willing to pay the price. They should charge as much as people are willing to pay. High prices will bring more motels to the market and that would pressure prices downward.
I had a nice motel in August 2021 in a small college town in MA. Rooms were clean and breakfast was legitimately good - fresh raspberries and dates, but it was a college town so I wasn’t worried about crime. If you’re in the hood in Atlanta though, get a hotel with a guard.

Why would anyone need to travel somewhere to stay in the "hood"?
General rules of thumb for a big city hotel: Only stay in places that have gated, secure parking, even if it costs extra. Never park your car on the street.
I stick to Bonvoy, Hilton, IHG or Hyatt brands and have never had a problem.
Initially the Great Resignation may have contributed to higher room rates to compensate for fewer workers willing to work those jobs, we’ve had above average wage growth in the aftermath of the pandemic. However I do believe “greedflation” is a real thing.
I’ve noticed a sharp rise in prices post Covid. I’ve heard it’s due to lack of people to work at the hotels. Maybe that impact # of rooms.
But a typical “safe” Hilton type hotel is now way more expensive and not near as clean or comfortable as it used to be
if you’re in a major city like chicago or Boston, it’s minimum usd $300/night. A 4/5 star hotel is $500-$700 if you’re there at a busy time
its crazy. I’ve used Ramadas or Hiltons off the hwy outside medium size cities and they’re $150-$200/night. Steep for a 9-10 hour stop through
Prices are up because more people are traveling post-Covid. Also, while inflation is an issue, people are still spending overall.
The market's doing its thing. You want prices to fall -- stop spending. Everyone blames politicians, but we can also do our part. Or not, apparently.
Personally, I have always spent $ on travel because it's a treat for me. You all sleeping in your cars ... Unreal, with all the carjackings are you not afraid?

I avoid $100+ hotels when I can. On my last road trip this summer my average was pretty similar to the years before around $83 or so. I refused to pay $250 plus $30-50 parking in Chicago. I stayed a little outside and drove in and out again. Not ideal but better than spending $400 more for two nights. Not worth it in my opinion and with my kind of budget.
I started traveling as a backpacker, so I am used to $5 to $15 hotels in developing countries. So you have to keep that in mind.
At the end you just sleep in a bed and as long as no cockroaches disturb your sleep and the shower water is running , it's all good.
All hotels in the last year are price gouging. I hate Priceline but I still use them. Search the site a few days in advance and they will send you a coupon code. Motel 6 is full of prostitutes and pimps on crack. Only seek out three stars or hire with 8.0 reviews. I traveled from South Padre Island to Key West and back last year and made out ok. Prices have gone up but that's do to corporate greed.
Not sure I see the problem: 1) Prostitutes aren't going to attack you. 2) Won't pimps leave you alone if you don't want crack?
