This happened earlier in the year at the Garmin (!!!) Marathon in Olathe, Kansas, home of Garmin US. A few days after the race we got this in the mail...
Thank you to all those who ran or volunteered this past weekend at the Garmin Olathe Marathon. There was an unfortunate error in marking a turnaround point and the full and half marathon distances were affected by this error. The Olathe Chamber of Commerce takes full responsibility and apologizes for the error.
The course was pre-certified and the error occurred when the course was marked. The total distance was 1,794 feet short or .34 miles. That means the full marathon was 25.86 miles and the half marathon was 12.76 miles.
We understand that each of you are on your own running journey and each may have a particular set of standards that you or your running club follow.
This letter provides participants documentation to appeal clubs/organizations for certified race credit due to the short course. We’re incredibly sorry this error occurred. The Garmin Olathe Marathon may be accepted as a certified race with proper documentation; please check your club/organizations rules to confirm.
