Cruz Culpepper out at Ole Miss

Cruz ran 4:00 as a 17 year old pre super shoes and 1:48 in high school. He clearly has a ton of potential- won't be surprised if we eventually see far better than sub 4 whereever he ends up

I'm a Jordan fan and think it's silly people world suggest she just stops. If she is enjoying it and cashing Nike checks just keep going. Throw out whatever this 5k/HM result is, and just look at the last few years. It's obvious something major has changed. Going from 2:20 to 2:37, 2:33, 2:41 shows this isn't a one time bomb. Even in her half races she hasn't been near her marathon pr pace.

My question is during some of the past training blocks her comments seemed to indicate she had really good fitness? Is she actually training at levels that would indicate <2:25 fitness or is she just being positive bc it's her job and training is indicating 2:35+ fitness? If she was getting out to 20 miles and falling apart I would look at it one way, but she is not even starting off at paces she would need.

Knew of a family who had one kid running at one school and one at the other. It was a district where you could choose what school to attend, and usually middle school friendgroups and stuff influence that.

Sorry for believing that article...surprised no one has given us more info on the Culpepper's situation. From Boulder area to El Paso to Flagstaff...hope their family is managing that okay

That was a long time ago, even before Covid. He bailed on a great situation at Washington, he bailed on Niwot his senior track season and now Ole Miss too. It's a pattern for sure with him. Not sure, but seeing his odd IG posts last season and his inability to make it on Ole Miss track squad in the 800 or 1500 last season tells us that he lacks the discipline and fortitude to make it in NCAA.

...I do think a coach like Wetmore could help him but he may be past it all already. It happens. Not every top HS prospect continues successfully. Mix in high expectations, Covid and having fun in college and maybe he's just lost interest.

Has the tools but does not have the mentality.

Entitled kid from rich area ... oh yeah and his parents were extremely talented in a self-centered profession and have never had a real job? It's a setup for failure.

Why would Wetmore help him, like mentally? Maybe he could be CU's first pro male miler since Pfifer.

That is their reputation. It's almost as if individual agenda is a family value passed down to the boys. Seems to bear out with kids at not just different high schools, but in different school districts. And hiring private coaching for an underclassman. Looks like academics aren't a leading priority, at any rate.

Don't see Wetmore signing up for a rehab project. Nor Mike Smith for the matter. Bouncing from two different institutions in two consecutive years is shades of a Fernando Cabada situation.

You all are making this sound so awful. Could it just be bad luck that his coach at Ole Miss left?

I gotta suspect Vanhoy leaving played a role, but it could be a number of things. In the end it’s his choice, whether it looks bad (having left two schools now) or whatever, it’s his choice. He’s definitely a talented runner, maybe a bit inconsistent at this point, but he’s talented for sure. I assume his inconsistency largely has to do with the lack of stability he’s had since HS. Throw in Covid, his decision to split time with his HS team and the Coburn/Bosshard group his senior track season, stints at Washington and Ole Miss —— that’s a lot changes. He’ll obviously miss this XC season and track too if he doesn’t enroll somewhere for Spring 2023. Maybe he works with Bosshard again or finds a small group somewhere to train. Or maybe he just doesn’t really want to do it anymore. Time will tell, but it’s up to him and he shouldn’t be chastised for living his life.

More likely that he's ineligible at this point and it has zero to do with whoever is the coach there.

Definitely a possibility.
