Meldonium is completely different than epo. Epo stimulates the production of more red blood cells, allowing you to carry more oxygen, staving off the arrival of lactic acidosis longer.
Meldonium essentially prevents the body’s synthesis of carnitibe, which causes a number of effects. Supposedly increases endurance and muscular strength, though this has not been proven. It’s more of a medicine given to European cardiac patients long term after suffering a heart attack. Very popular in Russia- fir both athletes and cardiac patients, alike.
Going by what you say the effects of Meldonium might not have given a significant advantage to this Italian steeplechaser, but it is difficult to know from the outside. I think what we do know is that not many distance runners who choose to cross the line select this product as an aid to their performance, which poses the question - why did this Italian athlete chose to take this, because he’s still claiming his innocence, even though that is the usual tactic of those who have been found guilty. Deny, deny, deny until it even becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy and the perpetrator of the nefarious infraction believes himself to be innocent of the charges brought against him.
A pity his career has ended this way because even if he gets back this judicial episode will always hang on his shoulders and he will be viewed differently. What boggles the mind is that in the grand scheme of things - he did not need to take this product. He could probably still have been a great athlete without taking it.
Unfortunately, the majority of those caught claim innocence. My feeling is that Meldonium is likely a part of a series of agents taken for enhanced affect. On its own, there is little proven physiologic advantage. However, when combined with other substances as of yet unknown, it may serve a significant purpose.
Incredible that the Italian who finished third in the race, Osama Zoghlami, was not implicated in anything despite the fact that he was a training partner during some of the pre-European championships training camps with Abdelwahed. This does open the possibility that the Italian athlete was the victim of spiking. Abdelwahed is claiming his innocence loud and clear. Something doesn’t seem right, or am I the one who is being naïve and covering one’s face in the sand?
Just looked at the results again and so happy that the Finnish athlete, Raitanen, claimed the gold in this race.

I am sure that you and Rekrunner could have a series of exchanges here and by the end of it this runner would be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize or the equivalent of being canonized as a saint in the Catholic Church because of his preternatural innocence and virtue.

I've never heard of Ahmed Abdelwahed so can't really comment on him or his character.
I do wonder why Meldonium is banned. All the reasons and arguments I've seen so far don't seem to justify banning it.
Do they use Morocco as a kind of Regional Ethical template?
Incult.
Terrorism that appeared in Europe is du to the Regional Ethical template from Morocco?
It's your consuming/materialist society that provoke that.
Well, let's park terrorism outside this thread, as there's thankfully no link to the steeplechaser in question. i'd ask how the many North African dopers in endurance running are not themselves trying to max their stake in a 'consuming/materialist society'; as you've raised the point.

Hi Coevett! Is is thanks to your ginormous IQ that you always capitalize "rekrunner" when you impersonate (poorly) other posters?

Oh I assure you I am not Coevett. I really don’t care for the dude.
Darn Italy had seemingly upgraded its Distance Program with Good Distance Runners, Example 3 Steeplers Competing with Sub 8:15 Credentials, I was hoping it was all Coaching and Developing talent oh well.

It probably was mostly good development and coaching so let’s not let this episode with this guy, Abdelwahed, paint a negative picture for everybody else. I recently watched the European swimming championships in Rome, Italy, and the Italian delegation came away with a ton of medals in swimming, I think almost more than any other country. No reason they can’t do it in track and field also.

European Swimming championships Rome 2022, medals. Italy won an astonishing 67 medals way ahead of the competition. Interesting to see that the Ukraine, finished third in the medals table. Yes, that’s right, war torn Ukraine finished third in the medals table! it would be interesting to know if their swimmers trained in the Ukraine or overseas to maintain that high ranking in swimming? Also it’s fascinating to consider that Italy is so far ahead of Spain in swimming, but that perhaps the opposite is true in track and field with Spain winning more medals than Italy in that discipline.
It’s like in South America, Brazil is the country which dominates in swimming way ahead of the competition, with Argentina providing very few international level swimmers for whatever reason they have. These are cultural anomalies perhaps.
The 2022 European Aquatics Championships took place in Rome, Italy, from 11 to 21 August 2022. The event exactly coincided with, but was not officially part of, the 2022 European Championships. This diverged from the joined f...

Actually, the way medals tables are set up to me is bizarre in a way. Take the example of Sweden which won a total of 8 medals but 4 of those medals were gold medals. With this result Sweden finished 7th in the medals table ahead of France, and yet France won a total of 21 medals, but because France only won 3 gold medals they are placed behind Sweden in the overall medals table, but I think this is bizarre because France overall has much more depth in swimming compared with Sweden. Anyway that’s the way it’s set up.
So two doping cases in a week involving Arabic immigrant runners, to go along with the many other cases in Europe, but it's still 'racist' to think that Katir being Moroccan born adds to the suspicion of his rapid rise? No doubt this guy was '100% Italian'.
This can be the 1st test of my "doper's box" idea.
Ban of only 6 months to 1 year if he attends 6 to 12 high profile meets and sits in the doper's box.
You may be correct because the benefits he derived from taking this product appear to be marginal at best, although those with more knowledge of pharmaceutical products may think otherwise. This is a regrettable episode for the Italian athlete nevertheless because guilt less or not, the exposure of this case will not favor him in the future in anyway, so once again, in my opinion, they should not have brought up this case before reaching a reasonable conclusion somewhere down the road.
If he's cheating with this, he's probably cheating with other stuff. We know that EPO testing hardly catches any of them, that's why most of the Kenyans (and Americans) get caught for roids, sarms, rat poison etc.

I can see where you’re coming from and I appreciate your points but I think we have to keep in mind that most of these French, Italian, Spanish, Belgian, runners of north African descent usually come from very disadvantaged backgrounds where running (or football soccer ) is one of the few ways to get them out of their unfortunate life situation. This does not excuse what they do (if they cross the line ), but they’re grabbing one of the few things where they can validate their existence and so perhaps crossing the line is less of an issue with these people compared with your average citizens who do not face these challenges in those countries aforementioned.

Abdelwahed bears a striking resemblance to famous French steeple King, Mekhissi, who infamously disqualified a Kenyan from the medal table in 2016 in Rio, when he complained that the Kenyan had stepped on the inside line. They appear to have almost the same physique, around 6.2/170 or (1.90/75kg) approx. Big powerful guys, just like Bob Tahri, Who proceeded these guys and was the French steeple chase King for many years.
The 3000 m steeplechase is a strange event comprising very small runners like some of the Kenyans, and then very tall and powerful runners as well, like these French and Italian runners. Raitanen, The athlete from Finland who recently won the European championships also appears quite tall but I’m not quite sure what his stats are.
No more news on this case these days, and I’m not sure whether an appeal will be lodged by his defense team. All we know is that this Italian is shouting from the rooftops that he’s perfectly innocent, raising the possibility that someone may have tampered with his comestibles (this is not explicitly stated however), which might have brought about this adverse finding. One feels sorry in a way for this athlete because his future is on hold at the moment.
He has lost credibility whatever the final result. They should’ve never named him in this case until due diligence was performed.
