Three weeks.
Three weeks.
I've found that I feel and do best when I do my hardest, longest run three weeks out. Then, two weeks out, I do another 20-miler, but not at the same effort level. I do my last tempo workout 9 days out. And then I run about 14-16 the weekend before. It's a hard balance between fitness and recovery, but this is at least what works for me.
probably 3 weeks before. with that said, if you follow that 16 mile tops training program, then you can probably do this 16 miles just a week before. 16 mile is pretty darn easy if you run them slowly and slowly build up to it.

I'm trying the 16 mile tops program now. It calls for 16 miles am MP + 30 three weeks out. In the past I always did 20+ three weeks out. I'm very unsure about this experiment but fitness is improving.
