Sadly, it looks like Doshi will be the only person currently on the roster who will be scoring after this year. It will be him and all the incoming 9th graders.
I’m thinking Jonah Sloan (10:17) and Nathaniel Porter (9:52 in the 3200) (both incoming juniors) will also score.
Besides L&L/Sahlman/Cantu/Doshi/Martinez, Porter was the only person returning who ran a sub-10 in the 3200 and sub-4:30 in the 1600. So he might actually be the one taking the 7th varsity spot this year.
It’s not an uncommon thing at Newbury Park to not know who their #7 is when the season starts. They have meets where people outside their top 6 face off against each other to see who gets the seventh spot. And I expect this will happen again this year.
Porter could end up being their 7th, but Jonah Sloan running 10:17 as a 10th grader doesn’t bode well for his chances of ever sniffing the varsity.
I think this demonstrates how the thin the pipeline at Np is compared with year’s past when a 10:17 10th grader is considered a potential scorer compared with the 8:43 Lex ran as a 10th grader and he was the 3rd or 4th scorer as an 11th grader.
The thing is, in 2023 NP won’t be at the 2022 level. They might actually struggle to make it to NXN. So people who ran a 10:17 last year will be good enough to score in 2023.
Ventura has the best incoming junior-and-under class actually. So this is looking to be the top CA team in 2023.

Might struggle to make NXN? They may struggle to make the state meet with that line up. Fortunately the incoming class is so stacked they’ll find someone, but NXN doesn’t seem like even a remote possibility.

Right. There are 4 CA teams with 4 class of 2024 / 2025 guys that broke 10 minutes in the 3200, with their 5th not far off.
Brosnan better get some of his B-team guys to really step up.
The middle school on Vashon Island (Washington) had an 8th grader run 9:45 winning the NON middle school 2 mile, and another 8th grader run 4:54 for a mile at the same meet.
So either one of Zasloff or Rhoe (the 4th and 5th fastest incoming 9th graders) will never be scoring for the team

Possibly Jack “4:39 as a freshman” Watson as well. Although his 3200 times were not on par with his XC times and 1600 times
So yes, huge improvement required by their non seniors. There will be a battle this year to be the 7th man on the team. Porter should get it, but others have their eye on it, I am sure.
Interestingly, Porter and Shetty rank high in NP’s all time Soph list. Watson is also right up there in NP’s all time freshman list. Dickran is probably the best incoming freshman in NP history.
So maybe huge improvement is possible.
Colin was already running 4:16 as a freshman and he came in much slower than Dickran.
Doshi was also running “only” 5:00 as an incoming freshman and ran 9:02 as a soph.

First of all, Doshi was running that as a 7th grader. Doesn't look like he has any results in his 8th grade year, probably due to Covid.
Porter, Shetty and Watson may be fairly high on the all time lists, but are light years behind the Youngs and Sahlmans at that age. They Youngs/Sahlmans were running 4:15 as 9th graders and 4:0x, 8:4x as 10th graders. I don't think you can expect 4:39 10th graders to be anywhere in the same stratosphere as them.
We'll see how this next group of incoming 9th graders do. They may have been a bit more serious as middle schoolers as they competed in JO stuff and the Sunset series meets, etc. The Youngs and Sahlmans were part time runners, did other sports and probably didn't train much at that age (at least that's what it sounded like).
If any of these incoming 9th graders run 14:4x in their first ever high school XC race like Lex did, we'll know they're the real deal.

I agree of course that the 2023 team will be nothing like the 2021 (or 2022) team. That may never happen again in the history of HS running.
However, the 2023 team could end up being a national winning team (or close).
This year will give us a good indication. It’s unfortunate that Halvorson did not end up going to NP.

Or it's unfortunate those going to NP didn't go to the schools they were slated for. Imagine how stoked Camarillo would be to have Dikran or Oxnard would be to have Sloan, etc.
