People go to SUNYs for good academics at a cheap price.
When money isn't an issue, kids prefer schools that offer comparable academics, but flashy things like competitive football/basketball, pretty campuses, weather.
There's some level in pride in being from Pennsylvania and going to Penn State. You don't see that in New York.
Thank you. The SUNY schools are not very appealing. Academically many are very good but they don't offer the amenities that other land grant state schools do. The weather is also not very good in upstate NY. Most are not aesthetically pleasing nor are most in exciting college towns. Coupled with mediocre school sports they're not the dream schools for most kids.
Bloomington Indiana or Buffalo?
Oxford, Ohio or Geneseo?
Newark, Del or Albany?
State College, Pa or Stonybrook?
Columbus, Ohio or Binghamton?
Price wise they're a great option for New Yorkers but if price wasn't an issue would you choose any of them?
Nevertheless there's a good chance my son will end up at Binghamton.
Geneseo and Stony Brook are the best options on the table. Like posted before, Bing had Schaefer but will be getting a lot of good guys coming in without losing very much in the future. Stony is routinely getting better by putting up good numbers, developing athletes, and sending guys to regionals. ronin knows his stuff. Geneseo gets the best track record for developing talent and they’re a D3 powerhouse. Dan Moore is a GOAT. Great dude and wants best for athletes. As for the other schools, I don’t know much but have heard a lot of weird stuff. Albany distance fell off but has very good track team. don’t know the coach. Area kinda sucks too. Buffalo is just an absolute graveyard for any good talent coming outta high school for men and women. The track record their is insane with the good guys they get locally or in NY that go to crap. Heard from former section 3 guy that the mens coach hates on the guys and doesn’t take accountability. Campus is ugly and weird location.
Best option is probably Stony or Genny. Bing or UB if you’re son wants academically superior classes (preferably Bing). Albany is your son wants more money.
If SUNYs are your only option because of financial reasons you should look into lower tier D1 private schools that will have a ton of grants, aids, and athletic money. What are your PRs?
I think stony brook might have the best team, and is very good academically, but I would not wanna run there just in terms of environment. Bing is similar except I don’t think they are quite as good besides Schaffer who is graduating. I have a teammate who runs at bing and it seems like they get a lot of talent, but have a smaller team. Geneseo is imo the best program for running considering they are pretty similar in times and just have far less talent, but they also have a million kids. I think in terms of the who the best coach out of those three it would go geneseo, stony brook, bing. Besides that idk much.
You are crazy. The best coach order is obviously Bing, Stony Brook, Albany, then way down the list is Geneseo. Bing has a soph at 3:45 for 1500 and 14:14 for 5k, and a freshman at 3:46 as well as another soph at 3:50. One additional soph at 1:51 for 800 and another soph at 29:45.
Run the financial aid calculators on some of the private school websites just to be sure you aren't eligible for financial that would make the cost comparable to a SUNY. St. Lawrence for instance is a beautiful campus with a great running culture and has a lot of need based aid available. If none of the privates work financially I second the recommendation for Geneseo - a great running program, and you get to compete for championships rather than 6th place in the America East.
I agree with NY XC fan. I was very happy at on every level at St. Lawrence early to mid 1970s and it's evolved far further since. It has a solid D3 program and if financial aid makes it comparable with SUNYs, I'd check it out. Through coaching circles I've known many who attended and have spoken very highly of Geneseo through the years. At SLU we ran at Potsdam, Plattsburgh, Cortland for SUNYs and Oswego came to us. I knew T&F athletes at all. One of my favorite memories was the indoor track at University of Rochester where we disappeared under the stands for a spell!
The California State University system had it right when they built their campuses. Many of the SUNYs were expanded in 1960s when concrete buildings were in vogue. Nothing aesthetically, academically or athletically like UCLA and others in CA.

I forgot to mention Bing had a different soph at 8:58 in the steeplechase. By the way, Geneseo on average gets better recruits. Bing has a roster limit of 12 for distance so they have to be selective. Geneseo has an unlimited roster size and more access to academic scholarships, leadership grants, and financial aid. Most geneseo athletes would not have been accepted to Bing

As a high school coach in NY, really have been impressed what Bing has done at the national level. If Bing can get talent, they can develop it for sure. Last couple years of recruiting have been great for them for what they are limited to. Even after Schafer/Mackay they have a couple good athletes that potentially can make nationals. (They got a woman transfer from Utah whose ran 4:16 1500 and a high school girl who got 3rd at NBN in the 5k)
However, from what I heard financially it's hard to do that from budget to scholarships. Even some of their staff are part time so keeping the good ones is hard to do. The last assistant distance coach I knew very well and he was part time for 5 years plus, great guy and a grinder!!! Wish he stayed but I knew he was gonna get a better job soon enough.

Just to clarify, UCLA is in the University of California system ( Cal, Irvine, Santa Barbara, etc), very different from the Cal State system (SLO, Long Beach, SDSU, etc)
The kid who doesn’t find SUNY schools appealing is not a tool. He or she is one of many who don’t find SUNY schools appealing. I concede that the SUNY schools offer a sound education and that is all that really matters, but flagship schools like Maryland have a sizable contingent of New Yorkers for a reason. Rutgers suffers from the same, and have often wondered why New York and New Jersey have not done better in terms of attractiveness and reputation of its public schools (although again rationally the schools offer a good education.).
I stopped at New Paltz before going to Mohonk Mountain Inn (an incredible place to run) and again it gave off all sorts of blah - likely a decent school though.
I hired a guy from SUNY Potsdam, about as cold and unappealing as you can get. He was a wrestler and admitted while he had little fun there, he did not think he would have survived as a math major where distractions abound. So again education is what matters. I have tried to hire him back several times to no avail! Went to his dream school - Notre Dame for grad school - a course of action many advisors would support.
I would not choose a school for running unless a top recruit. Even then, education should drive the process.
Here we go Saints. I played soccer at SLU and much more recently than you were there but the cross country and track and field programs were always competitive on the regional and national levels when I had attended.
I am a NYS recruit, trying to decide which school to go to. Needs to be SUNY bc of financial aid, wondering which ones have best team/culture?
If you're good enough to get recruited from Bing, UB, or Stony Brook, then you should at least get in touch with some smaller regional private D1/D2s Those schools tend to offer better financial aid, offsetting a bunch of the extra costs, plus you could get a small-medium athletic scholarship to cut it down further if you find the right programs.
Don't just assume SUNYs are the cheapest. Iona is better than all the SUNYs for a distance runner; Marist, Siena, Fordham, etc have all had a lot of success in recent years. Even New England schools like Lowell, UNH, CCSU, Quinnipiac are very successful. If you're smart the Ivies can be very affordable too and they generally kick everyone's ass in XC.
Binghamton grad here. Solid school academically. Many grads head for law school, med school, MBAs, etc. I came from a modest economic background, and Binghamton & the other SUNY campuses have provided a great outlet for those striving to move up the socioeconomic ladder.
Binghamton has limited resources for athletics. Nevertheless, as others have mentioned, they've consistently produced good middle distance/distance runners. Albany is far and away the top overall SUNY program among the America East contingent. They travel more, have much better rounded teams.
Don’t pick a school based on running. The reality is you aren’t gonna be a pro runner. So focus on good education and finding a team and campus you actually enjoy. 2 years after college you aren’t gonna care what you’re PB’s were. Work hard and have a good time with it. If you’re halfway decent go d3 and enjoy it and try to be a big fish in a small pond - odds are that won’t happen either unless you see yourself running low 4, low 14, sub 30
I agree with the above posters that UB, SBU, Bing, Geneseo, and UAlbany should be your short list of SUNY schools. Personally, I cannot stand Buffalo or Long Island, so those two would be immediately discounted for me. It may be different for you. I would say try to narrow it down to 3 of those 5, contact the coaches, and see if they’re interested. If they are, try to schedule an official visit with them this fall (Geneseo is D3 so it wouldn’t count towards the limit but it would still be worth visiting). Figure out which team you fit in with the best, which campus you like the most, which schools you would get accepted to, and which schools would be the cheapest. Then, make your decision.
The one thing I will add is that Annette Acuff at Bing is probably the best 1500m coach in the entire state, regardless of division or type of school. If you want to break 4:00, go there. If you’re not at the level to be considering that, then go through the normal process. But they are the only SUNY that consistently produces sub-4:00 milers (SB is the only other SUNY that’s ever gotten a guy under 4:00) and they have 3 frosh/soph athletes poised to take a crack at it in the coming years.

Acuff is one of the best 1500m coaches IN THE NATION. One of her former athletes, Holt, just got 4th at the USATF Championships. Her women's senior Mackay got 7th in the USATF Championship.
Dan Moore at Geneseo has no character, he'll bore you to sleep. He is benefitting greatly from what Woodsie built. If Dan were to take over a program that were struggling, he doesn't have what it takes to build it up.
