I actually trained much more like a distance runner, but my weakest event always was the mile though. I think that I often tried treating the mile like a slightly faster and shorter 3k, and I also was never able to hit the true "extended pace" workouts (i.e. 3x800 at mile) in practice. I'd run conservatively to try to feel comfortable with 800 to go, but I should have treated it more like an extended 800 including the positive split. All my PRs were set using (slight - 1 to 2%) positive splits, and I also never had great leg speed but could "hang on" to a PR and win a fair amount of (HS) by increasing my effort from laps 6-8 with only a slight decrease in speed
PRs - 52 in a 4x4, 1:53, 4:00 (1500), 8:24 (3000).
