    I remember watching that race in 84, there was a lot of build up for Mary Slaney. As an American, I was po'd at first but after watching the video several times it really was inadvertent and what struck me was Budd seemed to lose heart and did not finish well.

    I’m an interview, Zola mentioned this. I can’t remember everything, but Zola does mention she felt bad and dropped off pace.

I myself have some Indian blood am not offended by any racial slur that may apply to me and there are many. For the record, Indian is not a racial slur just because someone decides it is. The more accurate term would be Asians… since that’s where the Indians came from.

    Thanks for the article. I think she has since moved back to South Africa. Still running. I was never anywhere close to a superstar like her but I -- like most runners -- can relate to the running for the joy of it.. for the balance it brings to life. Worth more than any medal.

    After watching that clip again, Budd’s tactics look very suspicious, almost like she was purposely jousting, to ‘sweep the leg’, when her attempted cut-in to get to the rail was not working.
