A better subject would have been - “Coach of multiple national champions leaves prestigious university for Volunteer position.”
I hope the brojos change it to this! Much better.
There won’t be a significant number of transfers from ND to UT (would set the over/under at 0.5). Way different schools plus nowhere to run in Knoxville
Wow - Tennessee wants to be good on the track. Two slam dunk hires with Carlson and Ross. Must be shelling out the money over there.
The new AD is definitely serious. Two big name hires plus a 37M indoor track facility in his 22/23 budget. Ross is getting 450K. Carlson must be getting something close to that too.
Was making <100k at ND, making 250k at Tennessee. Good move by Carlson. We'll see how good he is a recruiter now that he doesn't have the pull of ND academics to help him along.
Then again he will not have to deal with Notre Dame's admission and academic limitations. You have to recruit a certain type of kid that wants that academic challenge. Don't forget that Notre Dame places limitations on athletics compared to the win at all costs mentality of the SEC.
not necessarily true. recruiting shouldn’t be too hard
solid state school, top notch facilities, great overall history, and a phenomenal team
It won’t be extremely hard, but he’ll have less money than Beth used. I believe he’ll have to show a level of athlete development he maybe didn’t have to at ND. Can he turn a 9:15 kid into a 13:30 5k guy or a 5:00 girl into 4:15 1500m. If not, his first agenda should be to hire an assistant with this caliber of experience, not a lackey.
Newsflash.....they are already great in track...they took 3rd yesterday.
21 out of 34 points came from field events (13 points were from Ashe and 4x1).
You could have Harding, Ross, etc coming with Duane from NCA&T, as well as Notre Dame distance recruits with Carlson. That third place could be a title next year
Gotta figure Jacobs will be good for 12-16 pts... and with a bachelors from ND in hand, why not? Add Ross in the 400/4x4 and there are your 2023 NCAA team champions.
Let's be honest - if Ross comes, and they win the 400m and 4x4, .. winning a championship would help recruiting immensely.
As for distance? One or two strong athletes .. even in mid-D can do a lot at the championships. Convince a 400/800 runner and you've got the 4x400 and 800m.

Look at their current roster. There’s no way Beth had more than 1 or 1 and a half. Why would Carlson take the job if that’s all he got?
The rumors are NIL money, which as of now you cannot recruit off of. Shall be interesting to see if they can get it done without bloody hands.
He had about 6 scholarships to work with at ND. He will be lucky to have 3 at Tennessee. He won't be happy after a few years of crappy teams.
This is comparable to Solinsky at Florida. All Solinsky needs to do is score a few distance points and he'll get a women's track national title every year (they'll get a men's title without any distance points easily). This year he grabbed a few in the 800 and his 5k runner came out of nowhere for 8th and clinched the team title before the 4x4.

Director of Cross-Country and Distance? We are just making up titles now. So does he get his own cross country scholarships and is independent of Duane Ross?
Tennessee men just took 3rd at the NCAA meet without distance. SMH....
All the buzz at NCAA’s was that he does have separate budget and scholarships from Ross. So no, the title is not made up. Totally new model UT is going with
AD Danny White, the definition of nepotism and entitlement, doesn't have a clue.
Distance runners are smart. Easier to recruit at ND than Tennessee.
This is my concern. Sean is a great coach but why are distance guys going to want to go to Tennessee?
Religion? No. Notre Dame gets so many freebies just because of the religion, much like BYU.
Academics? If you really care, you'll go to Stanford or an Ivy or a better state school.
Cost? I assume Ross would be in charge of the scholarships so it's unlikely to be way cheaper. Even if he has his own scholarships, he ca't go all in on distance like an NAU. Now, the rumor is out there that they are just going to do NIL. But are donors really going to want to pony up multiple hundreds of thousands a year to win a track or xc title?
Regardless, I think it's a great move for him (making 3 times as much) as long as he's happy being like Pete Watson at Texas. Making bank, coaching some studs and making NCAAs in xc but not a player for an xc title.

Tennessee has been on the leading edge of the NIL Collective scene in Football. It will be interesting to see if that model can/will expand to other sports.
