This or the 5k. Longer race so I can enjoy watching it more but not so long it consumes too much of my day to watch it. A lot can happen in a 5 or 10k as well.
I'd agree with you, but sometimes if it isn't a good field, this race can just be BORING as crap to watch. Sometimes it just drags on and on and on and we already know who will win. Or sometimes it's just incredibly slow for no reason. They are fun to watch, but occasionally they suck.
Thank you for bringing up level. That’s an important consideration. At the collegiate level where teams tend to be more evenly matched and team championships are often on the line, the 4x400 can be thrilling. At the professional level, the US tends to dominate, and although I love seeing them dominate, there’s not as much drama.
I’d go with the professional men’s 1500. The distance is not too long, not too short, and it’s great to see the different tactics. Close second for me would be collegiate 4x400.
Same here and I figured this would not be a popular answer. The 10,000 (men and women) are my two favorite events to watch at Olympics and Worlds. I assume it must be pretty boring for most non-distance running fans though.
I guess I didn’t answer the question, though. If only one event probably the 400 hurdles
The 400 hurdles you have a few who will dominate the race both for the men and women. No suspense in the race. The 400 x 4 has so many game-changers in the race. So much more exciting.

None of those things bother me. Ideally it's competitive at the front and I never care about times. Incredibly slow and waiting for someone to make a move is great. I know that's different from most people's preference and I'm in a minority. If the question were which race you never care if you see again I'd pick either the 100 or 200. They're both done almost before they start and you spend more time watching them get into their blocks than you spend watching them race. To each his own.
I want to say 4x800. As distance runner, it's more relatable to me than the 4x400 and can be just as exciting if its competitive. But 4x400's tend to be more competitive more often, so I'd vote 4x400.
Personally, I think I would choose the Mile or 1500. I really like this race. Long enough for lots of change to happen, but fast enough to be exciting and not take forever. Really fun race to watch when it's a good one. Sometimes you don't know who will win until the last 200. Or later.
I agree. To bad we don't get 2 choices because I'd also add the 800. Sorry to the OP if I broke your rules. But limiting choice to one event only, isn't easy. For honorable mention I'd also add the pole vault. One second you're on terra firma, the next second you're 18' to 20' up in the air. There is no sit and kick in this event. In my opinion this is the big boys with big balls event.
Agree totally with this. Nothing is more exciting.
The only problem with choosing the 4x400 is you get limited new pro races a year to watch (none at USAs or any Diamond league meets). You'd have to be a big fan of run of the mill NCAA invitationals and conference meets to get your fill. Maybe that's still enough for you.
