That's always been the case and always will be. The best athletes are going to play football, basketball, and baseball because that's what is on TV. That's also where the money is.
Ironically, all 5 of Brosnan's best runners have come from 2 families. He's not even doing a good job of getting those athletes out to his team either.
You must have been home schooled and never met an athlete from another sport to believe that. The football and baseball players at my school were muscular kids that would have never have been distance runners. Although there were some good middle distance runners that also played basketball, I’ve never seen a good XC runner that looked like he could have played in any of the major team sports. Without Brosnan, would Colin be an OL on the football team? Out of the thousands and thousands of kids that showed talent for running that have participated in XC and track, Colin is at least in the top 5. There are people with talent for a sport that just aren’t interested but it’s unlikely that someone as talented as Colin would do something besides distance running.
Future massive contracts are a realistic consideration for less than 1% of HS athletes. Even receiving a scholarship is a long shot for most athletes.
It seems that one of Brosnan’s strengths is that he gets a lot people to come out for the team.
Getting a lot of kids out for the team in NOT one of Brosnan’s strengths. He has a very small team that is 95% made up of top youth talents. He doesn’t get kids from other sports and doesn’t get kids who don’t have high level youth running backgrounds.
Take the Sahlmans and Youngs off of this year’s XC team and he’d still have qualified a team for Nationals.
Because the rest of the team was a bunch of youth track studs too. This has been pointed out many times on different threads. He has a team crammed with top level youth talent. The Youngs and Sahlmans just happen to be the best of them.
I just watched a six minute interview with Brosnan at the Pre Classic. He said that there are other kids that can do what Colin is doing (he's not referencing the other top kids), but they're not running, or they're in other sports, or just not committed. He's right. Think about all the schools that have the right mix of kids but just don't have a decent coach to get kids out and then train them properly.
Name one kid on NP in the six years he has coached that Brosnan has been able to turn into a sub 9:30 or sub 4:30 that wasn’t a youth stud. Name one that he picked out of another sport or found roaming the campus that didn’t have legit youth credentials.
You have to give some credit to Sean Brosnan for this paradigm shift in HS mile performance. 4:20 isn't fast anymore. Like 4:10 is OK. Still, a revolution in mindset and what is possible has made this the greatest year ever in HS distance track.
What were your HS PRs? Do you believe you could have run 10 seconds faster in the mile and 20 in the 2-mile if only you had thought you could? Could all of the guys that ran 4:10 before this mindset revolution have run 4:00 with positive thinking? What if they only had 54 second 400 speed?
I ran 4:07. I was good, but didn't train the way they do now nor did I have the equipment that they have.

Jace Aschbrenner he was not a stud and ran 8:44 in HS.

4:30? you're blind that list is to crazy to list
don't forget the girls. 4x1600 national record, Samantha McDonnell 4:37 mile and a bunch of other girls running 4:53

He ran 10:57 for 3200 as an 8th grader and had a long youth track history.

What equipment are you referring to? Besides treadmills, I’ve never heard of running equipment. Running 65 mpw was an option available to you and Brosnan didn’t invent intervals and tempo runs.

Ok, so name a kid that ran sub 4:30 that didn’t run youth track. The list is crazy, so it may take a little while to compile. I’ll wait.

Well, not only that, but they would have gotten 3rd there behind Jesuit and Cheyenne Mountain. Just did a calculation using the Milesplit Virtual meet tool by replacing the Sahlmans’ and Youngs times with the times of the top 4 NP JV runners that ran at that meet.
Grapevine would beaten Newbury Park without the Sahlmans and the Youngs had Brian Guevara been healthy all season, but 4th at nationals is still really good.

It's 95% parents who had fast children that decided to move to that school district. Brosnan is not getting the high school quarterback to quit and run cross country instead.

I doubt if all the good to great runners on NP needed to be recruited from other sports. From what I’ve read on LR, the development of his runners began in middle school and by HS there was a minimal chance of losing kids to other sports. As I’ve said before, distance runners have the wrong body type for other sports. People talk about guys with tremendous talent for distance running playing soccer, but it’s not as if everyone that goes out for that sport is going to be a starter.

Kids in "major sports" are less likely to drop their sports for "minor" ones like track & XC. I see kids all the time who are good, but not outstanding, basketball players, football players, etc., who might be better in track or XC but stay in their sport, whether because they want to be part of the "in crowd," or they believe that they can get that scholarship.
When I was in high school there was a basketball player who was decent but nowhere near good enough for any college interest. But the track coach took notice of his wiry frame and thought he could do something in track. He came out and after three weeks ran 2:02 for the 800, but soon lost interest and left the team. There are many kids like this but good luck in prying them away from their favored sport.

I give zero credit to his statements for the paradigm shift. His good coaching helped create fast runners that assisted with his paradigm shift. And he cleary is a good coach. But to think Martin, Burn, Harrison, etc are running fast because Brosnan purportedly invented some guru mantra that has trickled down to other runners is insulting to the runners and coaches who do the real work to get there. These other kids aren’t running or training harder or better because Brosnan had some quote that people thought sounded good/true.
There’s another popular thread right now re why high schoolers are running fast that has a near consensus re why it’s happening. None of that consensus includes magic words by Brosnan. Instead it focuses on training, opportunities, etc. The fawning over Brosnan/NP is out of control.
Pretty sure it’s just the shoes. 4:20 is now 4:15 with the same effort and training. I think it’s a good thing.
So, if the super shoes account for 5 seconds. Beadlescomb’s 3:52 indoor loss to Teare/Hocker in Adidas should have been a 3:47 victory and World Record.
Reinhardt’s 4:01 in normal spikes 2 years ago would’ve been a 3:56 if he used the spikes which means he’s actually regressed.
Cheruiyot had a 3:29 PB pre super spikes and has also run 3:29 in super spikes.
The top 10 times in the world at 1500-5000 has been steady for pretty much last 20 years. Super spikes have been available for at least 3 years by all pros and there has been no change.
So is your theory that super spikes don’t work on pros and only work college kids and below?

There are kids like that in every sport. There was some guys in the Babe Ruth baseball league that I played in that had tremendous talent, but in HS, they decided to get a part-time job instead of playing baseball or any other sport.
I don’t believe you’re really seeing players on the football field that have distance running talent. If you squint, you’ll notice they are big, muscular people. If a skinny distance runner was in a game, he would be likely to receive a season ending injury during the opening series.

Interesting.
Wow, you are DENSE. The world records in the 5k have been broken so your statement is wrong. Why do you leave out the 10k? Those world records were broken, too.
Most of the world records have been set by drug cheats. Now, clean athletes are breaking drug cheat world records with the assistance of super shoes.

You can’t take two families out and say they wouldn’t be good unless you took the top two families off every team.
Stupid argument from stupid people. You’re complaining and crying about a coach and he’s getting the job done and you’re complaining on Letsrun.
