not saying I'm a genius or comparable coach but this has been my theory as well. Mike Smith has spoken on a similar wavelength and has said that having so many roadblocks in your competitive career forces you to become a "problem solver" and think about the sport in a different way.
Meb has always been active in the development of running as a holistic part of life and I think, given some talent to work with, Meb would be outstanding.
I want to like your choice of Stember, but after some of the deep insecurities he showed when challenged during races, especially his trash talking, I sense he might have ego-driven battles with more stubborn athletes, not unlike Isiah Thomas and Doc Rivers had with their NBA athletes.
If he has learned to tailor that need to get at someone, he'd be great.
