I feel like many people didn't read the article. From reading the article, what I gather is the girls are in the wrong. Maybe the AD to a slight degree, for her stated reasoning. Possibly the coaches for not shutting this down immediately. When any kid asks if they can practice with their shirt off, the answer is no. If you allow the boys to do so, girls will ask next. School policy is almost always no for hs, to my understanding.
On to my point, one of the girls said the boys were allowed to practice shirtless. But then the petition later says "the boys were asked nicely to put their shirts back on and weren't punished". It sounds like both were asked to put shirts on once admin was notified, and only the girls refused, then later came back without shirts to protest at another school event, hence the suspension.
I am a coach that would not have shut this down. The petition was a good thing. I might have told them to be more respectful of the administration but it is interesting how this escalated because they were not and now it has garnered national attention. They might just get their way because of that.
To me this goes beyond the reasoning that if the boys can go without a shirt then they can too. The boys should be allowed to run without a shirt also.
I can understand a dress code in school for boys and girls during class. I don’t understand this at all.
Has anyone in favor of this ever been to the beach? The dress code there is even less restrictive.
My athletes wear sports bras to cool off, and not at all to get the attention of others much less adults, and members of the public. In this age it is what they wear in training.
It’s the administration that are sexualizing what they wear.
The AD feels that it is distracting for the male coaches for them to wear sports bras. Really? It sounds like the AD has some personal things to work through. If I were the coach I would be highly offended by that.
