A post shared by Kendrick Lamar (@kendricklamar) on Jul 17, 2017 at 12:20pm PDT Hip-hop is officially the most consumed genre of music in the United States. This might not be surprising to music fans out there, but now there...
Sorry, this is fake news. Bluegrass is the most popular genre in the US. People here recognize and respect the finger-picking’ talent it takes to play a banjo.
1) The music in the background is fine, and of course that's from Marvin Gaye. The rest of it is crap.
2) Not fond of ANYONE using the N word, so immediately I hate it when I hear that. Time for that to go the way of the dodo.
3) I recognize that rapping is a skill, but it's a skill I don't really appreciate, and I don't consider it "music", so this isn't a "song" in my opinion. It's a different thing altogether...spoken word, poetry, whatever, but it's not music. Yes there is music in the background, but sometimes comedians and magicians use music in the background, and what they are doing isn't considered "music."
ok, gramps. time for your diaper change and bottle for nap nap.
Meh. Rap started to get big when I was a little kid, and then it got REALLY big, especially for white kids, when I was in high school. My opinion about it has nothing to do with being old (not a grandpa though BTW).
Want to tell me that some old school Run DMC is music or some Cypress Hill, then I'll agree. This clip from Kendrick Lamar though isn't.
There is nobody who knows music thinks hip hop is good music, if you are a kid who simply doesn't know any better, well there you go.
I'm a history buff, yep start t the beginning, trust me hip hop just doesn't work. Sure sure for a know nothing kid.....fine.
What a pretentious shmuck. You sound like an out-of-touch old fart. Person posted a link proving hip-hop's popularity and you just swerve. Here's another link below confirming the same.
You seem to be on this "if you like hip hop best, then you're an infant physically, mentally, and musical taste" trip. Other genres are great. Other artists from other genres are great. However, to dismiss hip hop's greatness is asinine. Post any song from any genre that has the lyrical complexity, storytelling, etc. that hip hop has. I've already provided a one Kendrick song alone that meets this criteria. What other genre is giving you double/triple/quadruple entendres, heavy metaphors and similes, thought-provoking storytelling, a robust sound production, relevant cultural references, etc?

Idk if you perceive hip hop to only be be either old 80's hip hip or commercial radio hip hop of "lil [insert name]," then you're missing on a lot of great artistry and music. Take a listen to this song, read the lyrics, hear the production, and tell me what you think. Maybe you just don't understand the references, slang, or musicality of hip hop to appreciate it?

Actually just your basic music geek/freak who owns over 10,000 records/tapes/CD's and has heard it all. Yes if you listen to a wide variety of music there is no way hip hop can compare to the other genres of music and that is very obvious.
You know how it works, who spends $$$$ on music, yep....kids. Who has little depth of musical knowledge....kids.
If you know music you are way beyond hip hop and you have to be told that?

All the genres you listed began as youth oriented and eventually got stagnant and reincarnated into new ones. There were certainly old folk saying the same things you do about the delta blues during it’s inception. I am 41, and consider myself too old for Lamar. I wouldn’t cast judgement on it bc I am not the demo. Also, I’d like to publically laugh at flagpole for citing Cypress Hill. Lol you suck.

Agreed. If you are a student of music (and older than early 20s), hip hop is pretty near the bottom - it's uninspired, redundant, derivative, formulaic, and just about every other adjective I can think of to characterize lame music.
And yes, of course, there are exceptions within hip hop, but they would be few.
What astounds (and frustrates) me is how long this stuff has been popular. No accounting for bad taste, as they say.

Well, we know writing isn't your forte....
Anyway, I don't understand your need to compare hip hop to other genres of music; it's like comparing apples and oranges. Just because you personally don't like hip hop and prefer Grace Potter or whatever, it doesn't mean one is objectively better than the other.
Song is garbage. 1. He is just another rapper talking about the hood so nothing new there. 2 He throws slurs around when he can’t figure out his next line so also nothing new there. 3. He isn’t singing - he’s just talking which is a sign he has no talent. 4. talking about taking wrong turns and wheel alignments is dumb. Need I go on?
Go listen to some real music from an actual genre.
