Seriously, what school is it? Like other posters have alluded to, unless it is St Thomas, this makes no sense.

No, don't send a video. Ask about the standards, mention that you are scheduled to run a 3K this weekend and ask if there is a particular time you should run in the 3K to be considered for the team.

I coached a kid that begged onto a team although he was faster than most on the team. He ended up walking on and hated it and transferred.

It sounds like Olaf. I know the women made cuts two years ago and the men's coach told my high school teammate he wants to keep the roster around 40. I talked with him during Indoor and he seemed nice enough. The last coach was legendary, so maybe he's feeling pressure to be better than him?

You must have mistyped that 3k goal. 10:30 would be astonishingly slow for a 4:28 1500m runner. You must mean 9:30. Now, that coach doesn't want to add anyone to the team who wouldn't make them substantially better and he probably has roster limits tied to Title IX. A local team here took about 7 guys and 50 women on its xc team to help match the football team for title ix, and many of those women were track athletes who didn't even know they were on the xc team. A D3 team is always going to have people with good hs times who don't train in college, and sometimes roster fillers are needed. But if you finish the season strong and train hard over the summer and get down to, say, 4:15/9:10/15:50 for 1500/3k/5k, the coach would probably give you a spot. So, try asking the coach nicely for a time standard to qualify and start raising your mileage and workouts to get there by fall since you're locked into this school.

I’m a better 1500 and 800 runner but my coach wants me to race longer distances to become a more well-rounded runner. My 3K PR is from cross country so I think I can improve a lot. My high school coach doesn’t really know how to train distance runners so I’m planning to use a training plan I found on Letsrun to train more outside of practices.

Ignore the advice to dump this school and go elsewhere. I'm sure you chose this school for academic and personal reasons that far outweigh getting a chance to run D3.

Best advice here so far is to be polite, ask about what times he'd like to see in order to give you a chance, and DO NOT copy the AD and DO NOT let your mom get involved in the communications. Show him you are interested, passionate about running and will keep working hard. Also, don't send him a 10:30 3K result. Just don't. Get your 800/1500 faster if those are your best events.

Now we know the answer. You won't be top 7 in XC and won't score at conference in track so you are of no benefit.

Do not let your mother make contact. Emails from parents scream that the kid isn't independent enough to stand on his own.

Not only does it suggest that you aren't independent, it raises concern that your parents will be an ongoing PITA in the event that he does let you on the team.

If I'm a coach and I'm getting emails from your parents before you're even on the team, I am immediately having premonitions of all the parental communication yet to come. Am I going to be getting emails from your mom with "helpful hints" regarding my training plans? Are your parents going to complain if you don't travel to a meet or if you don't get put on a relay team? Will adding you to the team just mean that I now have three additional people I need to explain myself to at every turn?

If you're borderline to make the team in the first place, any suggestion that you are going to be more trouble than you're worth will turn a "maybe" into a hard no instantaneously.

Withdraw your commitment, find and go to a school that is better for you.

Does the school have a club team? If so, you can continue to improve your way to a spot on the NCAA team.

I put my vote for this University. 5 times at 4:28 or slower.

3 of the 5 are decathletes. Unless OP can throw down a mean pole vault, I don't think his comparison is worth a lot.

If academics are important he'll stay and go to school. Run at the invitationals. We used to have plenty of those when I was a D1 Fullride.

Running is the simplest of sports. Shorts and shoes, and you can run right out your door. No team needed.

Its his dollar, he should get the most value from it. And that doesn't mean bending over and touching his toes for some lightweight coach.

I never considered Concordia Saint Paul. It seems more likely they're turning away slow athletes. Although many of the MIAC schools would crush them in XC.

If the coach says no, he probably has his mind set. Some coaches are just stubborn. I don't know if you remember this thread: https://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=9399112 The kid wanted to walk on and worked his ass off to hit the coach's times, but the coach was just stuck up and didn't want him. If you have faster times already, and he still doesn't want you, I would say look somewhere else.

My son runs for Notre Dame. They don't allow any scrubs into their meets.
