Awful. I looked on a map where this happened, looks like a typical crappy running scenario near a hotel. Mostly highways and major roads, and people probably still flying after they exit (or in this guy's case, drunk). I've really started to appreciate places making changes to protect pedestrians lately, but overall deaths are way up just in the past few years.
Eli was making very good progress following HS at Milligan and showed in the past year he had tons of potential. We grew up around the same area. If you knew him, he was a hard working, genuine but also really funny guy. This was very sad to hear!
Punishment will probably be a suspended license for 6 months.

1st offense needs to be a stiff penalty.
What??? He will get 5 to 15 years for the death and 2 to 5 for the injured athletes he is looking at 9 to 25 years. You get slammed for DUI's now no slap on the wrist these days.

Forgot too mention if he complains and trust to play the victim in this tragedy the courts will likely up it to second degree murder which carries a minimum of 15 years to life. Especially because he did not stop at the scene of the crime.
Very sad news. Condolences to his family and friends. We live in a dangerous place. Drivers distracted and unfortunately many times impaired. Cyclist are at great danger every single day more than runners I think. Please be safe out there. Probably most of you know this but try the following:
If possible do not run on the roads or at least not busy transited roads. Best places to run are trails or regional parks.
If you run on the roads face the traffic always and pay attention to the drivers you can easily recognize when someone is driving distracted.
